What to buy?

@myotis
Not really, I did mention increasing the shutter speed myself but thanks.
Searching the internet I have come across a few folk her turn the image stabiliser off, apparently it to slow?
Hey-ho my panning is crap so I will take up knitting instead.:)
You didn’t give up the shooting, you practiced and got better.

I know you weren’t entirely serious, but also we both know why you posted it ;)

Some IS lenses have different modes for panning, some work brilliantly others don’t. More reasons to keep practicing, and learn from your results

Don't take it personally, in any case you probably have better panned pictures than this one. But also take a look at the quality of @snerkler 's panned pictures to see if he knows what he's talking about (I don't recall seeing panning shots from @myotis ). That may help you decide whether it's equipment or technique.
I suspect you probably don't recall seeing any pictures from me, but my panning is also pretty crap now a days.

And it's got nothing to do with equipment and entirely down to my lack of practice and skill. I used to be good at panning things with a fairly predictable paths such as cars and planes, which I no longer have an interest in, and I don't put in enough practise to be much good at panning the less predictable paths of flying birds and dragonflies which I am still interested in,

However, I am confident that should I suddenly have a renewed interest in cars or planes, I would still need to put in a lot of practise, before being any good at it. In spite of the benefits from now using a Nikon Z8 with AF lenses, compared to using manual exposure SLRs and non-AF lenses when I photographed such things in the distant past.

This discussion of panning made me think of this image...

Red Arrows Sidmouth Air Show 2021 G9 P1013703.JPG

... one of the planes had to be blurred!

Other thanwildlife BiF which are/can be very unpredictable, I do not do much panning these days but here are some examples from some years back....all very small web sized images so the quality has suffered ....EXIF is intact...

All with dSLR and not the best of lenses (not sure but I think all shot with the Canon 70-300mm without any form of IS) and the last two are quite cropped compared to the first two.

PS I surmise if I re-visited the PP with more up to date software it is possible there is more to the files to achieve a better final file. I think all the above were processed in Photoshop CS2.
