Im saving to get a Canon EOS 450D. However, I dont know whether to:
A) Buy the kit, with the 18-55mm kit lens, then save again for a Canon 55-250mm.

or

B) Buy just the body, and a Canon 55-250mm lens

The latter woud take longer to save for but... would it be worth it?

What do you guys think?

Thanks

I would look at the Classified for sale forum. There are a number of lightly used cameras with a reasonable reduction from the "bought new" prices.

If you go down this route, I would seriously consider a 40d body. There is one that is provisionally sold, a 40d with a 17-85mm lens (I think), plus other bits and pieces with an asking price of £550.

I think if you took option B), you'd be screaming out for a wider lens in no time at all.

I bought a 1000D with the kit lens, a few weeks later I bought the 55-250.

Personally I'd go with option A), but that's just a personal thing.

Will the 18-55mm be enough to get me going? (First DSLR)

IMO, yes. But it won't be long before you want to go one step further, which I see you're already planning for.

If you're ignorant to the quality of other lenses, like me. Then you'll probably be more than happy with the kit lens. But for me, just simply knowing there was batter lenses available made me frustrated.

Yes, it would be enough to get you going.

While everyone has different needs, I know that when I started years ago it was with only a 50mm - and that was fine with me. Things have obviously changed since then and there are many other options now. Some might prefer a longer focal length from the outset, while others would be happy enough beginning to learn how to make photos while using the 18-55.

If you're comfortable with buying secondhand then I believe the earlier suggestion in this thread to do so is a good one.

To be honest I'd prefer to buy new, nothing against secondhand stuff, I just like going and getting something new and shiny!

Think I'm just going to focus on getting enough for the kit lens, then start saving for the longer focal length which Im sure I'm going to want to play with!

Played with a Sony A200 a few days ago, what are they like compared to the 450D?

Yes :) As a beginner, (speaking from personal experience) the wider end is usually more appreciated than the long end. would go with option A.

The 450D is great :D

SECOND HAND! ! ! ! You can grab an amazing camera, a 20d or 350d would be more than adequate for your first camera.

The main thing is the lens, try and get the best quality lens you can afford. But always check the POTN and for sale forums here before buying new!

Whats the POTN?

I'm on the lookout for a new camera as well.

Cheers

The 450 is a good camera and the 18-55IS kit lens is a good place to start - yes there are better lenses out there - which cost more than the 450 body does, but as a start off, I'd def recommend the kit lens, it maybe worth looking about as there is a 2 lens kit available - which includes the 55-250 IS lens and I seem to think it's another £40-60 saving over individual prices.

Don't forget to drive a hard bargin now the 500D is out

Good luck with your search

What are you planning to take pictures of? The 18-55 is a good start, but you'll be dissapointed if the first thing you're planning on doing it using it to take motorsport or aviation pics (or any others where the subject is a long way off!!)

Jessops can be massively overpriced, do a search on kelkoo, pricerunner and that camera price buster thing for better prices

Camera Price Buster is a good site to look at for starters, don't forget to try to get Jessops to price match if your going in - take printed evidence of prices with you to assist

I think it mainly depends on what you want to shoot, 55-250 will be OK for sports and portraits, but too wide for most landscape stuff.

One other thing to consider is get a new body and 55-250, and look for a second hand kit lens, there are plenty around as people upgrade them.

Im not specifying what I'll be shooting really as I dont really know, just anything that takes my eye really
