What features would you most like to see on a camera?
My first suggestion, in the same way you have highlight warning in review mode, wouldn't it be useful to have highlighted which parts of the image are in sharp focus. It would kill 2 birds also as if u had motion blur or camera shake you would know without having to zoom in.

Built in software like that would be awesome!

More buttons and less menus.

As fantastic as it would be to have a feature that tells you which parts of your image are in focus, I doubt the technology would ever be available. If it was possible then it would be built in to lenses to ensure that they absolutely focus correctly every single time.

Not necessarily, surely the contrast based focusing technology used in live could be applied to an already taken shot. I don't know, just theorizing

In body IS and live histogram in the viewfinder.

The latest Sony NEX has something like this. It puts a sort of halo round the in-focus parts of the rear screen.

My Panny MFT have the histogram, the G1 having it in the viewfinder, but they don't have in body IS. My Canon DSLR's have neither and will no doubt be last to market if they ever get there.

I agree with arclight.

And a clock , cos i go into the garden for 10 mins and go back in about an hour later , where does the time go

That's 'camera time', its like the difference between human years and dog years. To calculate camera time simply multiple by 2.5 x 10 to the power of n where n equals an integer chosen at random.

1: In camera/lens focus correction (This would be very hard to get right on some surfaces I would guess) or even a warning like what has already been mentioned.
2: Built in fart machine to get people to smile (or clear a space at busy events).
3: Built in gyro sensor leveling for landscape (I noticed all the digs on slanty landscape images lol)
4: Wireless triggers built into camera body.
5: Some kind of high power invisible light to make AF work in total darkness (with nightview mode so I can pretent to be SAS).
6: Hotshoe mount on side of camera for portrait shooting.
7: Bigger pro body thats lighter so I look really imposing and cool and the people look at me instead of Uncle bob.

..... and perhaps a wife that doesn't nag while your at it?

Good point!
8: Flowers and chocolates dispenser.
9: Mp3 library with compliments and apologies.
10: Earplugs.

Lateral thinking, I like it!

Built in ND grads/polarisers, with some way of selecting where you want the grad to be, and it doesnt have to be straight, you can draw it around objects. That would be awesome!

Focus bracketing for macro where the camera can take 3/5/7 shots and slightly alter the focus on each one. Then I could input them into a stacking programme to get really good DOF (or it could be done in camera).

I think they should put a password protected area in memory, that you can store owner information. This way it may be easier to get your beloved camera back if its stolen.

What features would I most like to see on a camera? Lenses that have an aperture ring actually on the lens. It's just a much easier way to set the aperture for me

Likewise include info to be embedded in exif for copyright, etc. (I think some high end models may already have this?)

And if we're adding the option to enter text in one place, perhaps an option to add a short note against an image - say to record the ND / grad combination used for that image, or the name of the animal / person in the shot.

Trick is to figure out a workable way to do this without impacting the camera as a camera!

Oddly enough, I've been wondering a lot lately why there aren't more digital rangefinder cameras availalble (for common lens brands like Nikon and Canon). These cameras tend to do away with menus altogether and have just a few buttons for the essential functions - and of course, manual focus !

That's what I'd like to see on my next camera - less functions, more funcionality !

1) A hot shoe on the side of the camera as well as the top
2) A button on the camera or lens that will temporally disable the flash - which will then switch on when you release the button
3) Extra low iso
4) Full manual focus (mechanical - not fly by wire) high end lenses that stop at infinity
5) A viewfinder that works well with glasses
6) A sensor then NEVER gets dirty
7) The ability to group focus points
8) The ability to play back voice notes that you have recorded on the camera with earphones

....
2) A button on the camera or lens that will temporally disable the flash - which will then switch on when you release the button....

My D2x has this - awesome feature that makes my life very, very easy when I need to check the ambient exposure when a transmitter is attached to the hotshoe :)

I'd like to see another shutter release button on the vertical grip for shooting with the flash on the right-hand side :)

I'd like a warning light for dust bunnies. The sensor cleaning mechanism works really well but it only works by default when you turn off and on and it's really irritating to have to edit a dust bunny out that's appeared mid shoot. Or even better auto dust bunny detection and removal. with a built in positive pressure system that stops the ingress of dust into the body.

I much prefer it as well, especially if you shoot in aperture-priority, just have your hand around the lens barrel and only a click left or right to change your working aperture - rather than a control dial.

Decent manual focus ring on lenses and a good'ol fashioned focussing screen with a prism and split centre - they seem convinced that photographers rely totally on auto focus.

As well as the focussing screen, bigger brighter viewfinders. Its how you see what you're photographing, but doesn't get much attention in mid range cameras.
I recently had a look through my old minolta x700, and now I'm trying to forget how good the vf picture is compared to my 550d.

Built-in radio (not optical) flash triggering, with TTL and ratio control, for native flashguns.

Agrree with this completely

My KX lets you input your name or whatever on the exif data so presumably the other Pentax models do as well...

my £70 powershot allready does it, it writes it to the maker notes and can only see it in DPP or an exif viewer :)

Not necessarily what they can "put on", but what they could also bring back: eye-controlled focus.

They should put a phone on them, fight the phone companys at their own game.
