So, Jackie says, "Fancy doing Dry January?" And being drunk at the time :) ....I said "yes".

Of course I had no idea what she was talking about and when I'd sobered up I Googled it. I tried to wangle my way out of it, but Jackie gave me "the look". After which it turned into a battle of sobriety. I will, of course, win :)

This ain't going to be easy.....but as an avid coffee drinker who when 30 days without a coffee....how hard can it be???!!!

Anyone else in.....?

Here's the link clicky linky

It'll be 8 years on 2 January since I had a drink. Don't miss it one bit.

One month doesn't strike me as a big deal. Didn't drink for twenty years but started again a few years ago. But could stop again any time.

ive not drank anything for over 5 years
not bothered me at all
and spent the money on camera stuff

Was reading recently that the average Briton spend thirty quid a week on alcohol....that's an amazing 1560 quid over fifty two weeks without counting special occasions...... plenty of camera gear :)

I did my fair share of drinking years ago, until I realised that I didn't actually enjoy it at all and just stopped. No desire to start again.

as others have said, i dont really have the cash to waste on alcohol these days (not like when i was younger) and can go several months without drinking.

now coffee, thats another matter entirely. fortunately have gone to home brewing to stop wasting so much money in franchised coffee shops.

Well, if going without a drink for a month is a problem, there might be a bigger problem. I know quite a few heavy drinkers who dry out in January and if they can, I'm sure you can! Enjoy it, sobriety can be a revelation!

I like a couple of pints but I've never been a big drinker feeling rough the next day soon stopped me drinking a lot

Some interesting comments there, especially Nod's.

I'm certainly not saying it's a big deal or that it's anything special. I can't remember the last week I didn't have a drink.

Cheers all.

I did sober for october for macmillan and I cant say it was difficult, with the exception of having to forego a rather delicious dessert because it had alcomahol in it.

Did it last year, not a massive drinker but do like a bottle of wine on a Friday after a long week at work, was ok the first week was the hardest

12 pints on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday night at the Fluke Inn... Inverness in the 70's are over thank goodness, how I survived that era is a miracle. Thought I was a thirsty Englishman until those Scot's taught me to drink hard liquor.
Rarely drink these days but do enjoy when I do.

Once my license comes back (NOT drink related!), I'll probably stop drinking. Have only really started again in the past couple of months, even breaking a long standing personal "rule" of not starting until 6pm and having the occasional pint with a pub lunch. Like Bill above, I used to drink rather a lot and actually stopped completely for a couple of years in my early 20s before realising that I was capable of moderation and that a pint needn't grow into a session! Barely drink here in the UK - too much tax, so I make up for it on holiday, when it's often cheaper to have wine than water, although if I'm driving, I stay off it.

I think I'll be giving up the drink entirely soon... while I don't crave it or owt, I've noticed that I like a glass of port in the evening... and after a few days of it, I've turned into a proper aggro bumhole.

You can do it, it's only a month.
31 Days
744 Hours, some of them asleep, some working, some thinking about taking photos :D

Well, having a few...it is New Year's Eve after all, and in 4 hours and 2 minutes no alcohol for 31 days.

Also, I promise to avoid mouthwash :D

Cheers and I'm watching you Matt :naughty:

I can beat all that, I'm 46 and the most alcohol-related drink I have had in all my life was half a pint of shandy. I just simply never had the inclination to get into it, like my brains is "wired" to dislike the taste of alcohol. I used to drink a lot of coca cola since I was a kid but I have totally stopped drinking that a year ago as I got worried about what it was doing to my stomach and bladder. At least I now no longer wee like a greyhound these days (so much better at night time for it).

Well, that's that.

Just had chat with my wife, who's joining me in this 'challenge' and I asked her, 'do I drink too much?', and she said, 'no, but when you do you drink a pint of JD,'.

I never intended this thread to become personal....but having drank a pint of JD..I'm beginning to wonder.

Rarely do I bare my soul on here. Seems strange.

I suspect I'm not unique in having an alcoholic father. Also, having severed in the forces, alcohol was cheap and readily available.

I drank a lot. Got into a lot of trouble. The consequences of which, in the forces, wasn't enjoyable!

At the moment I'm still drunk, which is why I'm typing this.

Am I an alcoholics?

31 days will tell.

Night all.

I my self like a couple of pints down my local boozer now and then but I have decided to give it up along with smoking for good. I have one reason I need to get a little healthier than I am. I don't have a dependency on either smoking or alcohol as I stopped smoking for 4 years before I started again so I am confident I can do both.

I asked my doctor about drinking large amounts of alcohol and when did you cross the line into being an alcoholic....her answer was when you get up in the morning and have a drink for breakfast......upon further questioning about drinking most evenings and lots at weekends, she informed me that was not alcoholism but was classed as binge alcoholism which is equally as bad..... the wife and I are also aiming at a dry January starting on the 2nd (birthday today) and hopefully carry out on our at least cut way back..... maybe we should have a sticky like the fitness thread to give moral support to one and other..... :)

Andy, are you doing it also for charity? I'm sure I saw a dry January piece on telly recently. If so, count me in as a sponsor. Will also join you in the endeavour, although I won't be avoiding it in puddings etc should they be offered, just not drinking for a month.

It's just a personal challenge. On completing it I'll donate what I would have spent on alcohol too Alcohol Concern.

Cheers and good luck

I could easily join this, but it would mean nothing. I rarely drink tbh. For some reason I've never taken to really wanting a drink. The taste of beer etc is OK, but I have to be in the mood. I never used to like lager as a teenager as it used to sit too gassy on my stomach, so I used to drink bitter.
I'll drink shorts on occasion, and on special occasions I'll have a right good drinkiepoos like last night. Rarely get bladdered though. Once or twice max a year maybe.

I do however have many other addictions :p, so the best of luck to anyone drying out for January. (y)

Cheers. I'm sure we'll all do fine - Friday will tell :angelic:
