Yes
I'm pretty computer savvy, and help the family a lot sorting out their IT problems, but sister in law said to me last night "Peter (my teenaged nephew) wants an IPad, will you go with him and help him pick the right one". I inwardly groaned as I know precious little about tablets.

After asking him what he want to do with it we narrowed it down to: - Surfing the net, Facebook, E-mails, listening to music, downloading and watching video's.

We decided he doesn't want an Apple IPad, as good as they are, they're an overkill for what he really wants.

I think we'd be looking at an android thingy, i.e. a big phone.

16GB or 32GB storage, or, if you can shove an SD (so cheap these days) card in, does it matter? We don't want the expense of a mobile network SIM card, just surfing when at home with the WiFi.

Any help, advice etc very much appreciated.

Pete

Edit - Oh, and a USB port may be useful, they don't all have them do they?

Google Nexus 7/10 (I have the 16G 7" here). 7" doesn't come with SD card but can be rooted and you can mount a USB key with a cable for a few £. IMHO, go with google - they supply the Android OS and will keep the Nexus current - at lest for the next 6 months or so (which is all you can say about longevity in the tablet age)

Is all his music and films in iTunes? If so the iPad will be best.

It is more expensive, but it is the best solution overall.

This ^ I've the N7, if 16gb is not enough the 32gb is only £199 now, mine is rooted and I can plug in usb memory sticks or card readers, the otg cable cost about £2.50.

If portability is important stick with the 7" size as it fits the pocket well, otherwise a 10" is good but a lot more expensive of course.

Thanks all for replying, Dale, he doesn't have any video's stored and his music is all MP3's, so I think Android is the way to go. The Nexus looks a likely candidate. Knowing him from experience it'll be trashed in 6 months anyway!

MMmmmm?

Nexus 10 16GB £319 - Samsung Galaxy Tab 16GB with capacity for an SD card £238, what am I getting for an extra £81?

Not a lot that he'd notice, a faster processor, more responsive screen, early updates. Bearing in mind it's only just been released, the N10 price will drop pretty soon I think, probably in January but if it's a 10" tablet you want the Galaxy is a good buy..

Thanks Hugh. Between his mum and I, we've persuaded him to wait 'til the new year, it isn't a Christmas prezzie. We'll see how the prices go if you think it's a better machine.

I like the Samsung Tab2, great for surfing the web and e-mails at home, plays videos, music and great for showing off my photos.

I'd say that makes it the killer deal.
