What Sports Lens?

Hi

Would like to start shooting sports (football, Crircket & Speedway) & would appreciate some advice on a suitbale lens for my Nikon D3000.

I'm guessing a lens with a range close to 300mm at least, but what about f numbers?? Will I need a lens that can open up to f2.4 at least?

A lot of the telephoto lenses I've looked at online seem to be f4 maximum apperture & although they claim to be good for sports photography is that really the case?

Any recomedations? And yes the cheaper the better, but overall vfm the main consideration for me.

Unfortunately if you are wanting fast glass i.e. nikon 300mm f2.8, sigma 120-300mm f2.8 etc you're talking 4 figures..... your D3000 ain't the best for high ISO work, so you need a fast lens, especially for football or speedway where light conditions can be very challenging...... So before recommendations are fired at you, a realistic budget would help...... are we talking less than £1000 or more than £1000

Under £1000 is definately my budget...I've thought about hiring a few different lenses I see how I get on but any recomendations would be appreciated.

Hiring a few lenses would be a good option, but you're limited with a budget of less than £1000 for fast glass.......
Your best option would be either a sigma 70-200mm f2.8 or a 2nd hand nikon version. The only affordable prime would be the nikkon 300mm f4 new or 2nd hand, but that won't be quick enough for lowlight photography like speedway and also, you're limited to lenses with autofocus motors built into the lens because of your camera body, although this range of lenses is slowly expanding to include the better lenses.
