haha

seriously.. unless your at a club they cant cover...they do have a lot of photogrpahers.. I did some work for them but I can only cover rugby on a thur/fri and not sundays so a little limited..

they didnt answer my emails when i worked for em... definitely give em a call... really nice bloke to talk to :)

Like KIPAX says, he's over run with requests from photographers wanting work so usually ignores them unless theyre already on the circuit and can offer something new, he has all areas covered and even has several top flight pro's who cover where you are, Bernard and Dave who are the official Wigan and Saints photographersand, Ste Jones who is the Widnes official photographer, Maurice who flits about between Salford, Leigh and Warrington and myself who covers all the above and most things this side of the pennines.

The Conference leagues, RL magazines etc have a long standing contract with Dave and probably wouldnt look beyond him to supply work, why would they, they have all bases covered with Dave including France, Australia and New Zealand, Super League, Championships and all amateur leagues.

Having said that we might be dropping the Championships next season as theres no money in it any more because they get their stuff sent in for free by idiots who are killing it for the rest of us, ive personally lost a guaranteed game every week from the Championships because of these people.

Word of advice, do not ever give it away free of charge as you'll end up never getting any paid work.

Thanks for the help from someone in the know gary,

This is the reason that im trying to find some avenues to work to try and make a bit of petrol money.

Looks like the market is pretty locked down at the moment, think i got some head scratching to do *-|

You need to keep plugging away until suddenly the door of oppertunity opens and once that does maybe another follows then another.......... ;)

If you give up thinking theres no chance then you'll never crack it. Maybe try phoning RL or NLP and do a couple on spec? they will pay for usage (although not much) but must be games they have no cover so be prepared to travel.

As Snapzz says keep plugging away

good luck

I have a class one super league rugby licence and can go to any match... I havent been to one single rugby game this season (one local in accrington.. grass roots stuff) .. No time and to be honest very little money in Rugby unless you can corner the market so to speak..Its not my fav game to shoot either.. good if all mud/rain shots and you dont need player names haha... My hat goes off to rlphotos and Gary Coyle.. managing to make something of it..

trade rl papers? what is it.. 6 quid a picture for freelance? good grief :(

Its a bit more than that, more in line with non league football

Which when you look at crowds at championship level is of similar size too

non league paper pays £50 quid a set... The rl papers dont pay anywhere near the same... been there havent done that :)

£12 - £15 per pic if you submit on spec, not bad if like me you got 28 published from last weekends Grand Final across both trades papers, trouble is i was working for a set fee so i only end up with half that, 2 in the Nationals helps though

Need to watch em though, ive seen folk submit on spec and not get paid only to see the pic being used weeks later as a "stock" pic and with no meta data saying no unpaid usage you dont have a leg to stand on.

.

but you have it pretty much cornered (which is GOOD! and exactly how someone should got at the market) My point is.. a freelancer at the same match would be lucky to get one in for 12 quid.. because the papers will pick yours/rlphotos first as its a done deal... hence my post re not much money in rugby :)

None of us are going to get rich on it, i hardly ever shoot on spec, AI, SWPix and the odd other agency have the majority of the market for the Nationals cornered, when the footy season kicks in though a lot of those guys turn to the premiership which leaves a gap for us to sneak a few in the nationals for a few weeks.

The local papers from the away teams are good payers as are the regionals like the YP/EP/LEP/T&A and Hudds Examiner who have cut back on their staffers over the last few years and farm it out freelancers.

If you can get a game from the agency then flog it onto the away teams local, away teams regional and the YP/EP then its a really good pay day

Moneys easier to come by from the amateurs than the Championship as the RFL supply some funding to cover 2 games a week, they were doing the same with Championship teams a couple of years ago but the clubs themselves and their own so called photographers shot themselves in the foot by giving pics away and the papers stopped commissioning games to agencies and using freebies, they all now complain the papers dont give them enough coverage:bonk:

I've been getting £15 a photo from League Express this season, which, to say at the start of the season, the club was getting very little coverage in the RL Media, and has since gone up to having photos from every game isn't too bad. However, I got far more from the local press for photos than I ever do from the RL Media...

Lucky boy, the locals round here are serviced with free pics from club members just happy to get their name and picture in the paper.

Oh dont worry, i have no intention of giving up, i am just scratching my head as to which door to knock on next and who i can pester :)

Football season started now and gives me something new to focus on and learn to shoot. I think untill something crops up im going to focus some real energy on shooting lots of the unders games in the hope of a few pics getting purchased before christmas as pressies.

Makes no odds to me wether im standing out in the cold and rain shooting OA or u6's, im still learning :)

I think ill try as someone mentioned before, trying the away teams locals to see if i have any luck :)

Gary, I would like a pound for every time I've read this advice/warning that nearly all the pro sports photographers on TP have given over the years, but no one seems to heed the advice so really how can they complain, they've only themselves to blame.

Martin there are also thousands out there who don't even come on here to read the advice.

Yes very true Rob.

Also what amazes me is that some people have read the advice and still persist in giving their shots away for free.

Because they believe by doing so will give them a "foothold" into the sport or just happy to see an image used with their name credited to it. Those looking for that foothold will usually find that when they then try to charge will get the usual "sorry we dont pay". Given images away in the hope they may eventually charge very rarely works and IMO is something of a myth.

Full time pro's work extremely hard to earn a living and sometimes when offering advice regarding charging v freebies are sometime scoft at by those who concider us greedy whingers. This is of course untrue as all we try to do is sell our products the same as any shop or stall. If anyone wants to make any sort of career in photography then you simply have to charge, having a credit next to an image does not put food on the table or pay the mortgage.

Whenever I am contacted by newspapers or magazines requesting usage I always ask "what are your rates?" Any offer of a credit is just refused there and then.

Sorry seem to be turning this into the usual rant! :)

Right behind you there Graham, I'm just glad that I had you, Gary, Phil (Purpleclouds), Tug, and all the others I've missed, pointing me in the right direction and I thank you all for that.

Sounds like a Awards speech.

As I say many times, Go in and ask to place an 18th birthday ad, Tell them you have no budget and see if it gets printed. You know the answer

Club's off to Barrow in Furness. I ducked out, on the grounds that I went there once in my life and have no wish to return ... However, off to Forest Green Rovers next Sat.

Been really busy, volunteered to do a 4-page advertising wrap for the club. Had a bit of creative freedom on part of it and re-used the back page from last time, also working to meet the Director's brief. Now wait to see what it looks like ...

Whats wrong with Barrow, a nice drive up the M6 and onto the a590 through the Lake District then on the approach to Barrow make sure you wind the windows up, you know youre there when you see the locals smacking each other across the face with radioactive Kippers, drive just out of town at night and look north to see the glow in the sky coming from the 3 headed Jam eaters just up the coast in Whitehaven and Workington.

It would be all Northern speak so they'd need a translator :gag:

I have a weekend off - a weekend off!!!! But might head to local Rugby Club to cover a match there...

I used to put tags on people around north west. always enjoyed the 2 hour drive into barrow at 2am because some little melt had cut their tag off to go out on the "town"

You know whats worse than barrow?

Walney!

**edit**

nice advice tony, the coastal road makes the journey much less of a drag, especially in the summer evenings :)

Well mines taking shape for next weekend

SAT Disablity football tournament in the morning... chorley non league footy in the afternoon and professional boxing in the evening, SUN 10k rd race in morning then rovers ladies in afternoon followed by basketball at 5pm ..

Where in Chorley are you on Sat Tony? I live in Chorley and have nothing on - I only shoot kids football tournaments so would be good to see how grown ups get shot if you are up for it (PM me if you are)?

Re the earlier posts about clubs using members or parents for images, one of my local ARLFCs had their first Annual Ball and I asked if I could cover it (I'm a full time photographer with on-site printing facilities) and was told that one of the parents was doing it with all proceeds going to the club. I've met the 'photographer' and he told me its only us hobby so don't know how the night turned out but he did do me out of a job (was told I could do it by one organiser until she was told this guy was doing it); hopefully it wasn't good and I get to do it next year!
