I've been running LR3 and CS5 on a 2.2 core2 duo with 3gb RAM on a 32 bit machine...Win7 pro

As you can probably appreciate these appz put a big ask on the kit.

So I've decided to invest in a faster editing machine..I have about £800 to spend ....What would you advise ? Where to go for best prices ? I have OS and display

I run:

Intel Core i7 2600K clocked to 4.4GHz
Alpenfohn Panorama Low Profile cooler
Asus P8P67-M PRO Motherboard
16GB RAM (4x4GB) Corsair Vengeance Low Profile Black
OCZ Vertex 60Gb SSD
Samsung F1 1Tb HDD
XFX HD 4650 1GB PCI-E Graphics
LG BD-RE & DVD±RW
Lian Li PC-V354B Case Black (includes 2 intake and 1 exhaust fans)
BeQuiet 480w Modular BN121 Power Supply

Up to this point we're at £950 (minus the below.. or OS, keyboard, mouse) obviously you can cut that price if you only want 8Gb memory, and you dont need the pro version of that board the LE version is £75. the optical drive, SSD and extra drive are optional.

2x Dell 2209WA 22" IPS Screens
Synology DS1010+ w/5x Samsung 2TB in RAID5
IcyBox Twin HD Box w/2x Samsung 2TB in RAID0

:D

Dell Studio XPS 8100

i7 quad core running at 2.93

16gb ram

1gb 5870 graphics

128gb Kingston SSD V100 for OS, programs and initial transfer drive for CF cards
2x1gb western digital caviar 7200 rpm drives back up drives and for storing restore points.

Win 7 pro 64bit

This cost me about £600 a year ago plus £120 for the SSD and £50 for an 8GB ram upgrade

this is a good one and well within budget with excellent spec and 16gb ram

Hi Simon....

I wish it was that simple pal...I'm running mine in a 20 Inch HP pavillion desktop replacement...

Its fantastic to cart around to show customers their images and also great for eventing as I can have several windows open on the screen at the same time...Unfortunately with the large files from weddings and sport it is too slow at number crunching...Importing and exporting from LR3 is a mare !!!

It has the max ram in there at the moment but as I have appz that require 32 bit OS so i cannot upgrade, so its deffo a new system.

I don't know about you guys but I'm always a bit wary of buying prebuilt from the Eb,y ...lower quality bits probably used to get prices down.

Thank you all for the advice and suggestions.

Would you change anything in hind sight Neil ?

not with hindsite, the system works great for what i use it for (large RAW files in Lightroom2, Photoshop CS3 while listening to FLAC files, while in IE etc etc :D).

upgrades for the future though, considering upgrading the graphics card which will mean the power supply will need upgrading slightly too.

watercooling is in the back of my mind also.. but thats pie in the sky lol

Any of you lot managed to make use of that 16GB ram? Is it worth having that much for anything?

Intel i5 M520 @ 2.40GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM
700GB Seagate HD 7200RPM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 2GB
Windows 7 64x
Photoshop CS5

For £800, you can get a pretty decent machine - better than mine easily. Focus on CPU and ram. DDR3 ram with a sandybridge i7 processor.

with the right apps and having them set to use that memory then it is pretty easy. i can get CS3 using about 4Gb alone (pushing my memory usage up to 8Gb). But Windows 7 can also use any unused memory as a cache so it isnt a waste.

Intel I5 2500k
Asus P8P67 M Pro Motherboard
16gb Ram
ATI Firepro v4800 Graphics Card
OCZ Vertex 2 120gb SSD (OS drive)
OCZ Vertex 30gb SSD (Photoshop Scratch Disk)
WD Caviar Black 2TB (Main projects)
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1Tb (Bits and peices)
Dell 30" 3007 WFPHC
Dell 27" 2709W
QNAP TS419p+ with 4x1TB Samsung F3 drives running Raid 5
Windows 7 x64
Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3

Runs everything I have thrown at it with no problems. I built it up with the spec I wanted as nothing ready made would come close.
