A wheel has fallen off my Midgeater. Anyone who lives in Scotland knows this is an emergency.

The wheel was held on the shaft by a springy washer inside a little chrome dome. The washer has little spring fingers on the inside which allow the washer to be pushed onto the shaft but they will not allow it to come off again until they rust through... which they have :(

I need to find a replacement but I can't use Google because I don't know what the darned things are called. Does anyone with an engineering bent know what I am looking for? I always save these when I get them but this one is nearly 1" internal diameter.

Living in hope.

Midgeaters

Maybe someone there can help?

It's not anything like this is it?

Or possibly any of these?

Third one down on the left. It's a small pic but I think it says "push on" which is the sort of thing I want, not most of the others which are circlips.
I thought there may be a specific term I needed like " belleville washers".

Would you know if the "push on" washers have a special name?

Starlock washers I think they are called.

I travel up there next weekend for a whole week, are those little critters still kicking about:eek:

Actually the last couple of nights have been quite chilly and the days have been blazing sunshine with a breeze so they've not been in evidence. They'll be back if it gets warm and humid again. I think we get some rain on Wednesday.

Sorry about the wet!

Not yet :(

Can't find starlock washers above 10mm and this one looks to be for a shaft about 22mm dia. It looks like it's officially a dome cap starlock retainer. Lots of places do the plain washer but nothing above 10mm. Even RS components let me down and they don't exist at Buck and Hickman/Farnell. Nor at Screwfix.

The only place i can think that might help you is a electric motor/rewind company. Good luck

Not looked to see what this thing is but can you put a plain washer and a jubilee clip on the shaft instead?

I should be able to get you some of these!
How many do you want?

Spence

Just the two. The inside diameter is either 20mm or 3/4".

I have found a couple of places that I can get them but the best deal was £5.20 for 20 pieces with a £23 delivery charge.

In case anyone is thinking of moving to Skye this is quite typical. You can get free delivery to the mainland side of the bridge but the other side will cost you the earth. The best one yet was a Calor Gas spare part for a barbecue set. Part cost about £5, delivery charge £56 for a part that would fit in a letter sized Jiffy bag. The only nationwide carriers that will cross the bridge are Parcelforce ( brilliant here but no one in England will use them) and TNT. All the rest give up at Inverness.

Just paste a link to one the same as your, it doesn't have to be the same size. But it needs to be the right type!
And pm me your address, if we have one in stock I'll post it tomorrow, otherwise I will get some with a few days.

Spence

As a last resort (or even a semi-permanent bodge!), you can drill a hole through the shaft and use a simple washer with a splitpin to secure it.
