What SLR to get? returning photographer

hi all,

used to have a 400d but looking to get back into photography again now :)

400d was great but felt i couldve done with a bit more versatility really but unsure where to go from now on really!!!

i have a budget for a camera and a lens initially of £700 and not fussed if i go new or used really.

like the 60d for the HD recording but wanted to know whether people suggest something else at all?

Welcome to TP:)

First of all, tell us what do you want to shoot - different bodies are better for different jobs.
 
ideally static automotive, some action in the form of motorsport and yachting, and looking to get into some portrait style stuff too :)
 
Well for action you'd ideally be after something fast with advanced autofocus and for that I'd go for Nikon d7000 over canon 60D. But... both of them cost 700-800 for body alone.
And you need a long lens... In canon world that could be 55-250 IS or 70-300 USM. You need to expand your budget tbh.

Motorsport really doesnt need amazing AF. 5DII's AF for example is plenty enough.
 
found that the 400 just wasnt able to keep up with some of the higher speed stuff if that makes sense. also found it quite a small body (which i know is purely aesthetic but as i'm 6ft 2 and have pretty big hands everything was a bit close together for me)

lens wise i know i'm gonna have to expand budget over time but ideally for the min i'll be happy with a body and a basic lens to keep me tiding over and messing around with settings and ideas to get back into the swing of things

Hi Ed

Think you need to be looking at the xxD range from Canon (if you are wanting to stay with them as you previously had the 400D), they are a bigger body and generally have a higher fps.

The 60D is a nice camera, a friend recently upgraded from a 450D to a 60D and really noticed a difference with size and it felt much better to him, it also is a higher fps and he finds it much better for Motorsport.

Budget will be the deciding factor for you - are you wanting new or 2nd hand - the 40D and 50D are verynice and capable bodies...

Lenses - the kit lens is a great lens to begin with, the 55-250IS is a belter for the price, I'd recommend the 70-300IS as well, if budget allows in the future, you can be looking at the 70-200 L range and Primes...

Getting on a bit now but check out Nikons D2'X, a big bomb proof camera that can be bought cheaply now or for something a little smaller but still largish the D300 is an amazing camera, either of these will give you quality at a very good price
 
to be honest i think its gonna have to be a 60d now. because of the HD filming which i'm sure will come in useful :)

50d hasnt got the capability of video so thats poss that one out. anyone had any dealings with the Hong Kong ebay sellers that are showing them for £760 with a kit lens? seem to have a high feedback rating but wondered if it was all scam?

In my experience the ebay Hong Kong ones are very good price wise, until you get the customs bill, which you will :) but still work out a little cheaper.. but the warranty issues are another story
 
ah ok.

other halfs brother works for jessops, so gonna see what sorta discount he can pull :) thinking a nifty fifity and a 17-85 to start :)
 
I've had a 550D and a 7D off ebay, never had a problem with either of them. I got my 7D from Digigood, very fast delivery, good prices and a very healthy feedback rating. In fact, they were so good I ordered a 580EX II the other day as well about £70 cheaper than Jessops. I buy most of my kit from them as they are reliable. Hope that helps

Don't buy a 17-85 new.....! I wouldn't recommend buying it anyway since my opinion is that its a very average lens, although ita not a bad starting point.

You with probably end up wanting to upgrade it quite quickly, in which case you will lose money. Buy used- they can be had for less than £200, the market is flooded with them.

Go have a look at MPB photographic, I seem to remember they have quite a few of them.
 
ho wimportant is video as I would be recommending the 50d at £450, 55-250 lens £100 and a standard kit lens 17-85 say about £170 which would keep you in budget and give you a reasonable set up to restart and you would not lose too much if you wanted to upgrade later.
 
Youre clearly keen on the video, so it seems a waste to discuss further.

But for your photographic needs I'd recommend a 40 d and a 3 rd party 2.8 standard zoom.

Build and image quality would be streets ahead of what you had previously and you could consider video as an upgrade later.
 
right,

ended up going 600d with a tamron (cant remember the length but its a 2.8). all in at under £600 :)

downside is due to supply issues i'm gonn have to wait a few weeks :(
 
To distinguish it from the later 5DII.
