Yes
I asked this as a side note in a thread started by somebody and didn't get a response so thought maybe I'd get a better response in my own thread.

I'm planning to do a bit more landscape shooting so am looking to get a few filters (probably 3 stop hard and 2-stop soft grad to start with, and maybe a 5 or 10 stop standard nd so I can get some of those ubiquitous water shots). I'm leaning towards hi-tech filters as they seem to be a good balance of quality and price.

My main camera is a 5d mark II and my widest lens currently is 24mm... what size filters would people recommend? (I already have a wide-angle Cokin P holder that I was given, which I gather is equivalent to the hi-tech 85mm)

Also - which hi-tech filters are people using? On their site (http://www.formatt.co.uk/stills-filters/products.aspx) they list HD filters, Glass Filters and Stills filters.

I use the hi tech and theyve always been great but then you can also add grads in post production so maybe they arent needed anymore

My view is that for colored grads, it's easiest to add in in post production.

After too many overexposed skies etc, I can't help feeling that there isn't a viable post production solution to replace ND grads.

It depends on the diameter of your lenses. The filters I use (SInghray) are 100mm wide x 150mm and I wouldn't recommend anything narrower than that. In fact I sometimes get the edge of the filter in shot if I'm not careful.

Can't advise on Hi-tech though, sorry.

Thanks Jerry. Hi-Tech do 100mm filters so I guess they would be about right (my largest lens is 77mm diameter)

I have some of the HiTech 100x150mm ND grads and they're fine at 24mm on my 24-70 (77mm thread). I can't see why they wouldn't be ok on a 24-200mm

Thanks mah1880 - was hoping someone would tell my I'd be fine with the 85mm ones, but maybe that's just a bit ambitious!

No worries. Also just noticed your other question re the filter types on the formatt website... you want the stills filters.

tbh, if you have the 85mm holder I'd be tempted to buy a cheap adaptor ring and filter just to see how well it works and go from there.

Thanks - I've already got a suitable 77mm adapter ring too so just need the filters really.

I think I'll just go ahead and order some 85mm filters...if all goes pear shaped I'm sure someone on here will want them!

I think you should be OK with a 24mm lens, but would struggle if you went to a 17mm lens on FF, I use Hitech 100mm filters in a Lee holder.
If you do invest in a Lee holder (and they are good), I'd advise on getting the 77mm wide angle adaptor instead of the normal 77mm adaptor.

Thanks Les. I don't have any plans in the immediate future to go wider than 24mm (but who knows what will happen if I start to get more interested in landscapes!).

I found there are not many horizons that are level so do all my work in PP after nothing worst then dark tops of trees or buildings with PP you can blend it in more to the sky line
You see them use on TV a lot now when using a colour grad and I think it look bad.

Thanks Chaz. At the moment I do grad work in PP, but I just find that sometimes there hasn't been a way to get the exposure right through PP (e.g. bright sky, darkish but not stationary foreground)
