I'm making a slideshow Christmas card for a small local charity, and the size of the file I make is an issue. To allow for people with old computers, the card they sent last year was only 4MB, so the images were pretty small. I did wonder about sending people a link to the slideshow (video) so that I could make the file bigger, but I think they want to actually send the file, as that's more like sending a card than sending a link.

So...
If I send a file, what's the largest file size that would be appropriate to allow for those with old PCs?
Or should I try to use a link instead and if so, what's the best way to make it seamless?
I was planning to make the slideshow with ProShow, unless there's a free app that would make the files smaller (for the same quality).

Any suggestions much appreciated

Thanks

It's an eCard.

It's to be emailed to lots of people, and should be easy for them to open and see.

I'm not happy with the quality when keeping the file size below the 5MB limit that I think some people have for email attachments (or is that just a sending limit for some?) so I'm considering using YouTube, and then sending the email from YouTube, with the video embeded in the email.

Any ideas?

If people are just viewing as a video 480px tall is common, thinking youtube etc. HD video's 1080 tall. I don't know how that will convert to file sizes though. Remember they will be looking at the image as a whole, not for perfect IQ. You can include a link to the larger one if people want it.

Indeed, but I'm not being picky, the quality of the 4MB file from last year was awful - it was still a nice Christmas card, but no photographer wants to see their images like that. YouTube will allow me a higher quality - they would have preferred the whole file to be an email attachment, but needs must. I will try loading from 480 to 1080 and see what it's like.

Thanks
