What shutter speed for props?

I have tried 1/125, 1/250, 1/400. It just seems to vary! Is it dependant on type of aircraft? If the shutter speed is too slow you can't see the propellor at all and too fast it looks too static! Does anyone use ND filters to get slow shutter speeds?
 
Probably get more response in talk rather than pics.

Not so much the type of aircraft more the engine and what the rpm is during any particular phase of flight. Even 'worse' with helicopters the rotor blades of the Chinook rotate so darned slow s shutter speed of under 1/100 is needed to show any significant rotor blur but with the neeaet Lynx during aerobatics the rotor blade tips could be close to supersonic so will almost always be blurred compared relative to the rest of the blades......boils down to making a choice and adjusting as needed.
 
have a look through flickr too, people often leave the exif available so might provide a reference point

Not sure if follow that, surely if light goes you would need to go to an even slower speed or up the iso/go to wider aperture?
