Hi

With a birthday and xmas coming up I'm toying with the idea of a Camera upgrade - currently I have a 350d with 2 IS lenses and am more than a little confused as to where to go next.

I mostly take photos of theatre productions so a better ISO range is the motivation for a change.

Budget will probably stretch to a 50d but all the reviews comment on noise issues - a 40d sounds great on paper but the only place I can find them is the Canon eBay Outlet and not sure about a purchase form them or failing that the reviews of the 500d seem great but not sure its a big enough change in quality of kit to warrant the price.

Sticking with canon because of the 2 lenses I have

Any though or advice on any of the above would be great

Thanks in advance
n

From what I can gather, image quality wise, the 500D will be a big step up from the 350D. The 40D is a great camera, the 50D (noise issues aside) is a decent improvement over the 40D....

The build quality of the xxD cameras is much better than the xxxD cameras, and buying second hand could get you a real bargain!

Thanks for reply
Lenses are EFS but i'm unlikely to be able to pursuade my birthday benefactor to buy 2nd hand

As this is going to be a new purchase (Canon outlet are good but most of what they sell is refurbished, so that's the 40D out unfortunately) that leaves you with the 500D and the 50D.

Out of these for what your mainly using it for I'd personally go for the 500D, your getting most of the 50D's features and performance and saving about £200 in the process.

I would also consider your glass situation, you don't state which two lenses you currently have but if they're slower than f/2.8 I think you'd gain a lot by maybe adding a fast prime to your kit bag, it would really be a benefit for low light theatre work. Depending on your distance from the stage something like an 85 f/1.8 would fit the bill perfectly... and with the £200 you saved on the camera and the proceeds from selling the 350D you sould be able to budget it in. ;)

If you buy from Canon Outlet, they may well be refurbished items, but will carry a warrenty and I would have thought would be as new - don't think you'd have any cocerns. If you are looking for new, then the 50D is a good upgrade - if you have a look through here, you will see many people happy with the 50D, but I believe you need good glass to get the best out of it. And as above, also worth considering the 450 / 500D models.
