Right, budget is about £300. Oh and it's on Friday so want to order from Warehouse Express tomorrow :)

I am thinking:

50mm f1.4 - Sigma or Nikon? Sigma is slightly over budget and Nikon slightly under.

I have a D40, so DX, and I want to shoot some cool Jane Bown style portraits. I just went to her exhibition and I'm feeling really inspired to do some natural light portraits.

I'd also quite like a wide-angle lens, but I really really love doing portraits so that might have to wait a bit. I was considering the 10-24 Sigma, so would be really interested to hear from anyone that has it. There's a f4.5-5.6 version (£392) or a f3.5 constant (£519). I've heard the Tokina 11-16 is brilliant, and it's f2.8, but won't AF on my D40. So another reason to wait for the wide angle. Would be interested in any other suggestions too :)

Golly...choices...choices.

I have the Sigma 50mm f1.4 and I wouldn't be without it. I also have a Sigma 12-24mm and I wouldn't be without that either, of the two I'd honestly rather have the 12-24mm.

I might blow your budget a bit now...

How about a bit of a compromise between the two? How about a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8? sharp, quite fast and quite wide, or how about a Sigma 20mm f1.8? or 30mm f1.4? They're both really really nice lenses and both quite fast.

PS - Happy Birthday!!

Thank you, it's on Friday! 30 so a big one too.

I have found the Sigma 10-20mm in a local camera shop (secondhand) for £295. Hmmmmm!!!!

I'm pretty sure you'll be very happy with it :)

happy birthday for tomorrow

I don't want a 55-200, I have a Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 which I am very happy with. I have heard the bokeh on the Nikon 35mm 1.8 isn't great. Going to check out the Sigma 30 1.4 now :)

I really want a wide angle too, but the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 which seems really good won't AF on my D40, and I am just loving my fast glass atm. So do I go for the Sigma 10-20 instead?

I think I may go for joint bday/Xmas presents from mum and hubby, so a lens around £300 from each, which is why I was thinking a portrait prime and a wide angle :D

I have the Sigma 12-24mm and it has HSM so will that work on your Nikon? One advantage of this lens is that it's full frame compatible, so you can hopefully carry on using it if you go full frame or buy a film camera.

If you're checking out the Sigma 30mm f1.4 you could also check out the 20mm f1.8 if you get the chance. I have both and if anything I think that the 20mm is actually a better lens. It is bigger than the 30mm and there's no HSM but it's lovely. Wider too. Which is nice.

Good luck. :)
