I'm going to take some photo's in my garden or flowers or my cats. I was wondering if someone could give me tips of what i could take some pictures of. Either angles, distance or anything.

And if someone could explain to me how i can make teh background blurry and focus on something, e.g a flower. I love those kind of shots but havent learned how to do it! i would be very grateful. I dont have a brilliant zoom -- and all ive got is a Canon 3000 QD. (quite rubbish!)

Any advice/tips?

Thanks
Rachel :)

The "blurry" thing happens with a wide open aperature. Hence why all these f2.8 lenses cost the earth.

In bright conditions even with a kit lens you should achieve this. Set your camera to Av (aperature priority) mode and then to widest aperature (smallest number) then focus on subject with a background fairly far off and job should be done.

Hope that all makes sense. Ask if that reads real bad! :D

So by changing the aperature -- can you explain how to do it?? sorry! Im very new to photography as you can probably guess!!

Please help.

You need to get a book or read up on the net to get a better idea of this. My quick answers are not really in-depth enough for what you will require.

in basic terms the aperature (amount hole is open at front of camera) will allow more light in the further open it is. For a given amount of light the shutter will need to remain open for longer as the aperature sixe is reduced.

One of the effects of this is the depth of field (DOF) will increase with the larger value (smaller hole) aperature.

To get the effect you first asked about you need a faster shutter speed and a smaller aperature figure (referred to as wide open).

in program mode your camera will not provide this however in Av mode (as stated earlier) you effectively control this depth of field as much as is possible given the ISO (film speed) you have set (or in case of film loaded).

This is a fairly basic concept but one that requires further reading. Start with your camera manual and work from there. A quick Google has found me this

looks like it might answer your questions more fully.

Thankyou that website is very useful! and so was the info you gave me :)

Rachel - when taking pics of your cats, always try and focus on their eyes. That is the holy grail of animal photography.

I can't find your camera on google, unless its an EOS 3000 35 mm film camera ?

What lens(es) do you have?

Yes it is that i believe...

It's wierd because i couldn't find it anywhere! i've looked hard, but if you believe you've found it please paste it over! :)

My lens is only 35-80mm because i haven't upgraded it. But should be soon, hopefully!

Thanks for the tip about the cats! i've just recently tried to take a picture of my cat surrounded by flowers etc, which i hope have turned out well! however it's not digital so who knows!

Anyway thanks
rachel.
