Yes
I used a 4gb class 6 transcend card for a canon 450D but as the 550D uses HD video as well is it the same type of card I use but just above a class 6? also is 4gb enough?
thanks

I use 4gb, and can get 150 RAW shots per card. Never used video, so can't comment on that.

Card memory is like money in the bank, you never really need them, but is good to know it's there, just in case. ;)

P.S. My main card is an 8gb Kingston, I can take 289 RAW+ with my Pentax K-x and I'm pretty satisfied with it.

I'd say a 4GB would be enough if you don't shoot RAW, otherwise, get the 8GB :)

thanks guys, what I was asking though is it the same type of SD card for the 550D as I used on the 450D?

450D uses SD cards, all their entry level cameras do. Must be some reason for it I just don't know it :).

Could be something to do with households already having them or somthing, or possibly because they are cheaper.

there are 3 main types of SD card, the normal SD (up to 4GB), SDHC (up to 32GB) and SDXC (more capacity)

Some cameras do support SD but not SDHC or SDXC, but for those that support SDHC & SDXC, they do accept SD.

The 550D in particular, accepts all of the 3 above types :), so the answer is, yes.

Canon changed to SD for the 450d. The idea was to be able to persuade P&S or bridge camera users to upgrade to a dSLR without having to buy new memory cards. Whether this was a successful strategy I don't know - but I would guess that it would then slow down the number of people who upgrade from an XXXd to an XXd body or above.

i have a 550d and use the sdhc cards that i had for my 500d
i did notice with a sandisc one that it would stop recording video after 3 seconds so i asume that that card is not fast enough
just checked the sandiscs are a class 2 thats probably why
i have some pny cards that are class 4 and they seem fine

the hc part is just high capacity a fast 512mb sd card will work but will be full in about 2-3 minutes

Windows Movie maker is free, the XP version is a bit pants, the windows 7 version is meant to a lot better.

I'm not 100% sure how much it costs retail, but Serif Movie Plus is fairly easy to use.

a 4gig card will only do about 12 minutes of hd video. If you plan on doing a lot get 8gig or 16 gig cards, i have 3 4gigs and an 8gig for my 500d, fastest you can afford for the video i'd say.

Speed is less of an issue for video than it is for photos. The bitrate of video is not that high compared to photos, especially if you shoot continuous high speed photos in bursts.

If a 4GB card does 12 minutes of video, that's 4,000 / 12 / 60 = 5.5MBytes/sec.

If your RAW files are, say, 15 secs, than if a card can successfully write one RAW file every 3 seconds which of course isn't much, then it's fast enough for video :)

the sandisc class4 ones i have are not fast enough to transfer the hd video from my 550d

You need class 6 at least for video recording, I have a 500D and only bought class 6 cards but a mate bought a 550D and was moaning that he could only record 20 second videos as it stopped about then. I tried one of my cards in there and it was fine so faster is better but I don't think the 550d makes full use of the class 10 cards so I would save some cash and get the class 6 cards. 4 or 8GB will be fine. I think due to legal reasons you can only record up to 29:59 of video in a single clip anyway.

I have a 550D and use a Sandisk 8GB Extreme HD Video SDHC Memory Card 20MB/s.
I have not used video much yet but seems to work fine. I am currently taking RAW+L

Had no problems yet

hope this helps

The first SD card I tried for video in the T2i/550D was a Transcend 8gb class 6 unit. The the results were "choppy", not at all smooth. I subsequently ordered SanDisk's Extreme class 10 (30MB/s) card thru one of Amazon.com's sellers on the 12th and it was delivered yesterday, the 15th.
(good delivery time by the U.S. Postal Svc. in this part of the country). The first video I shot was much, much smoother. My only dislike is the card's high price ($45.00 U.S.).

I have a 550D, as said earlier get at least a class 6, for video stuff I'm looking to invest in a 16gb card, HD will eat into it very quickly.
