I am looking for a new printer. Quality of prints are important but they are really going to be small prints (anything bigger I'll use PhotoBox etc). Anyway here are a shortlist.
Does anyone own one of them, have good/bad things to say about them? Any other printer?

Thanks for any help.

Canon
Canon PIXMA MG6250 (139.99)
Ink – colour (£29.99), Black (£13.99)

HP
HP Photosmart 6510 e-All-In-One (£109.99)
ink – colour (£24.99), 1 black (£7.99)

Kodak
Kodak Hero 5.1 (£89.99)
Ink – double pack colour and black (£17.99)

At your budget, my preference has been for Canon printers; I've found the higher end of the Pixma range to be very good quality.

It's worth saying that it's been almost two years since I was in the market for a printer and a lot may have changed since then.

One thing that i always check before i purchase is the Ink Cost.

But i think HP and Canon are the best on the market.

I like Epson printers because when the ink nozzles get clogged, you just keep printing the missing colour until it gets unclogged without fear of damaging the print head. With Canon, it's a very different story. I have a nearly 2 year Epson P50 and been using it with CISS without issue, my other printer is a Canon MP560 which is newer of the two and it has damaged print head.

Picture print quality should be equal, I like the quality of the epson though, but for but for black and white documents, the canon wins.

I was just trying to figure out why ?

HP you get a new head with every cartridge, Canons have removable heads, Epson have fixed heads.

I've had all 3 and had problems with blocked heads on all of them that wouldnt clear with cleaning cycles but all worked perfectly after some Printhead Hospital flushing liquid was run through.

I dont think theres much to choose with all the A4 printers these days each has a good printer in each price bracket.

My personal choice is now Canon but thats only a personal liking nothing else.

I'd go for a Canon printer, I've had an Epson and wasn't overly impressed with it.

I've currently got a iP Canon printer and get very good results with it

I'd strongly suggest going for one where there's a separate cartridge/reservoir for each colour because it's blooming annoying to chuck out a 30% full magenta & cyan when the yellow's empty... especially when the price (per ounce) of ink is approaching the price of gold.

I've got an Epson P50 too, for about 2 years and never had a problem that couldn't be cleared with a automatic head clean. It has 6 individual cartridges and is very economical with ink costs.

I use 3rd party compatible inks in it mostly for printing on blank printable discs and I have done around 3,000 of them so far, plus lots of other various printing including A4 photos on various special media and it is really excellent. I bought mine off ebay for £125 IIRC which included 10 sets of compatible inks which is cheaper than it is just for the printer in Staples now.

I also use an Epson P50 with a CIS and I think it is one of the best small printers I have had, I also have 2 large format Epson a 7880 and 9880 and all 3 have not given me any trouble, I got myself a spare P50 6 month ago thinking the the older one was perhaps a bit past it's sell by date( it had used 3 full sets of genuine carts and 1 full set of bottles with the CIS) but it just keeps on going it must have paid for it's self over and over.

I bought a used Epson stylus photo R1400 from ebay for £105 with a continuous ink system and it's been nothing but perfect for nearly a year now- Sharp as I would ever need and prints up to A3 format..

I've gone for the cheapest option. The Kodak.
I don't want to spend almost £200 on a printer and ink and regret it each time I print something off due to the high ink costs. If I really want good prints I will order them online.
I'll let you know how I get on with it.

Please do; as I said above, it has been a while since I checked out printers so I'll be interested in how you find this one.

is kodak really not worth buying? I am about to buy Kodak Hero 5.1 since it is compact home printer, just the right size that matches my preference...

you got to factor running costs when deciding to buy a printer. There are abviously cheap printers from every manufacturer, but the availability of third party inks and their cost influences my decision. I tend to go for Epson as you can find cheap third party inks easily.

I think epson would really be a good choice. It got good reviews from a lot of people. it even has a low cost genuine epson ink.. and btw kodak company is going down..
