hi everyone, just wondering if there is a huge difference in iso performance between a 650d(my current camera) and a 5d mkIII,and while we're at it a canon 1DX.
I'm doing a cross between indoor low light photography which needs high shutter speed(boxing) and people portraits using various flash set ups.
If i sell a kidney and buy a 24-70 f2.8 II,would the difference in iso/noise capabilities be noticable between the afore mentioned cameras..(disregard the crop factor for a moment).
any advise greatly received :)))

The 1dx for boxing... 12fps v 5dmkII 6fps ? I shoot low light boxing and the 1dx is a godsend for the iso capabilities

thanks all,i think its safe to say im never gonna be able to buy the 1DX ,the mention of the 6D has got me interested, does it compare to the 5d mkIII iso wise?

IMO yes have recently played with a 6D, I don't think the AF system is quite as good though

I was talking to my mate about this the other day. He has the 5d and shoots a lot of action shots. He can shoot at something like 128k ISo at f8 with a shutter speed of 1-1000! And get quality shots. I was going for the 7d but he says go for the 6d it well worth the extra.

thanks,i think im a centre point, focus lock and recompose kinda dude anyway, what do you guys think of the tamron 24-70 2.8...im looking at the 6d package with this lens :)

indoors? in low light situations that we are talking about...... hes pulling your leg..

I have a 6D and the ISO performance is incredible. I leave it on auto ISO most of the time when walking around and never really have to worry around it. Obviously when shooting a landscape or something you can set the ISO as low as you like.

It's not a high speed camera though. By that I mean the focus system is nowhere near as advanced as something like the 7D, 1Dx or the 5DMkIII. That's not to say it rubbish though.
I generally use the centre focus point and it works very well, but I don't really shoot fast moving subjects. The focus system does work down to -3ev apparently which means it can lock focus in a fairly dark environment. I think the 5DMkIII is only -2ev.

I wouldn't have thought boxing would be to much of a challenge for the 6D to be honest.

As Tony says he's pulling your leg, at 128k you'll get a 22mp noise file from the 5D3 the only reason I'd ever use that would be if I really really needed to catch something for evidence purposes with no time for flash or long exposure

thanks all for the info,i have "gotten away with it" almost on my 650d at 3200 iso,i dont think i will need to go up to 12800,and if the 6d is better at 3200 than the 650d at 3200 then im laughing right??? I dont know, thats why im relying on you guys with the knowlege.
So some of you guys think the 6d wont be a step up from the 650d regards iso performance?
is the difference between the 6d and 5d mkIII significant regards iso skills?
I could probably scrape to 5d but of course cant "really afford" either, but im thick like that and obsessed with photography :)

I've come from the 7D for similar reasons and am still astounded by the low light capabilities of the 5D3.

I shot these recently at 10'000 ISO, handheld, in a cave with no flash.

3200iso isn't far off as good as my 7D was at 800.

Considering the camera doesn't go up to 128k ISO, I think you can make your own judgement on that. ;) 12.8k is OK sometimes though, and it's not often you have to go up that high.

This goes up to 102500 but I was close!

Here's 25600 ISO without flash on a 5Diii with 24-70 f2.8L and an LED spotlight:

Yeah I must say, I've been very impressed with the high ISO and AF performances of the 5D3. The lack of noise is fantastic.

i think the question is ( beside the iso debate ) are you making money from the boxing photos ?
if the answer is yes the get the best camera for the job ( which is the 1dx ) it will pay for itself
if the answer is no then the 5d 3 would be my weapon of choice maybe second hand if money was a struggle

I'm not making steady money, and would have to wait a long time to get enough return to warrant the 1DX,good call

Very little money in boxing with too many photogrpahers plonking all sets on flikr.. almost impossible to sell any... I try and stick to local events and make sure I am the only person allowed to photogrpah...

all full frames have way better ISO performance than the latest canon croppers. Even 1DsII from 2004 slaughters them at ISO1600-3200.

I would first worry if you can make the ROI from 5DIII+glass. 1DX is amazing but kind of difficult to justify at the moment from financial point of view. When the new model comes out the used ones may start to look appealing.
