What pocket camera then?

Need a new pocket camera - my trusty Sony P200 has finally passed away.
Budget is up to £300 - needs to be small but very good optically - not fussed about video. Camera is used when skiing mostly as a quick grab and shoot thing.

What do people suggest??

Looked at that - but it is just too big and bulky to lob in your pocket
 
Oly Mju 1050 SW.

The SW series are waterproof, shockproof and cold resistant. Good in decent light but not ideal when the light levels fall.
 
Nikon P5000/6000 are good, but one of those waterproof Olympuses (Olympii :shrug:) would seem like a good choice for using in snow...
 
Not so worried about rugged/snow - I dont fall over!! :D

Need something that is going to be good in bright crisp light, with decent balanced whites etc and not noisy res.

They all say that :lol:

Pretty much any compact will be noisy above 400 iso, except the Sigma DP2, which has an APS-C sized sensor like most dslrs.
 
Ricoh GR2 is good too, although that might be slightly over your budget. Worth a look though.

The Sigma DP1 and DP2 (when its finally released)start to become noisy after about iso400 whereas most compacts become noisy after about iso100.

The images from the DP1 are stunning but its certainly not a compact, its kinda hard to define what it is mind you!

Definitely a love hate relationship :lol:
 
Oly 1030SW here.

Waterproof (and beer proof!), shockproof, 10mp, non produting lens (never going to get knocked off).

Small and slim enough to go everywhere (and mine does).
 
I would say definitely the Leica D-Lux 4 for sure but, as your budget is not quite up there, how about the Panny equivalent...Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3... :shrug:

Line em up, Ricoh, Leica, Canon, Casio, Kodak, Olympus, Nikon, Fuji, Samsung, Vivitar, Sony, Hitachi, GE, Pentax, Sanyo, etc, etc put them in a black bag and throw em in a crusher as they all have little girl sensors!!

Wait for the Sigma DP-2 or if you like a little wider go get the DP-1 as they have a man sized sensor in it!!! :D

hahaha I just re-read the OP and this is no good for you if your after a snapshot camera :lol:
 
Fuji F31fd for me. Handles noise superbly.
Out of production now, and pretty hard to come by, so I'm lead to believe. Don't know how true they are, but heard stories that they were going for £300-400 s/h a while ago.

EDIT: Just looked on ebay, and they seem to go for around £200!! (Although there are still a few asking for £300+) Which is still more than it cost, when they went out of production. I bought mine for £120 from the Fuji refurb shop a couple of years ago.
 
Limited zoom by the looks on the LX3 - which may just frustrate rather.

Afraid it is just a snappy shot cam - while it would be fun to play with my work stuff (5d ii etc) its just not practical with family in tow too. Hence it has to be a clicky click jobby - BUT - it needs to produce good quality in the images AND be small enough to go in a ski jacket pocket. Will probably have to have a li'l girlie sensors...

Off on hols at the end of next week - so need it before then.

panasonic tz series, well if panaxonic ever import any more to the uk....
