Yes
right guys, i need some help.
im in the market for photoshop, but i went into a shop today and there was lot's of different versions.

what i really need to know is, what's the main difference bertween all of them and whats best for me.

all help is greatly appreciated:thumbs:

thanks.

Unless you are into video all you will need is Photoshop CS4 but not the extended version unless you wish to wait awhile and keep an eye on the Adobe site for news of CS5 which I believe is on the cards!

Have you tried the DPP software that came with your 40D? Can do a fair bit.

I think CS4 is quite expensive, if you've not used Photoshop before you might want to try Elements instead, you can always upgrade at a later date but there is plenty in there to keep you going.

You can normally download trial versions for 30 days to see how you get on with them.

Good luck

Al

There have been quite a few threads on this, but if you haven't used Photoshop before I wouldn't bother with CS4.

Lightroom is great for quickly processing lots of images, but you can't do layers and a few other things that you can do in Elements/CS4.

What do you want to get out of your processing?

FWIW I do 99% of my editing in Lightroom, only going into Elements every so often.

there's two versions of Photoshop available in 3 prices. You can buy standard, extended and extended (student version) - If you're not making money from it, do you have a student kid? Big discount for it1

There are many vesions of the CS Suite which all include Photoshop. Some are focussed on web use, design use or video production use and some on all.

If you only want Ps, just buy that. If you want a suite, consider which software you want to use. Dreamweaver, Flash, InDesign, Premiere pro, Illustrator and many more are all included in the Master Suite but at about £2k it's expensive (unless that kid of yours is a student then it's down to around £400 for the lot)!

I found CS3 runs much better than CS4 on older hardware. However, you often won't find the older versions on sale in the usual places and caveat emptor from buying from places like Ebay.

The "extended" version is almost completely unnecessary for all but some very very specific tasks, so don't worry about it or be fooled into paying the premium for it.

Photoshop CS4 and Elements 8 are the current latest versions (CS5 due around april-ish) Lightroom is at 2.6 (with version 3 out soon-ish) and Paint shop pro x3 is the latest version of that. Photoshop extended CS4 version is the same and simply has extra features which a photographer most lightly wont use in the real world.
Which you choose depends on what your budget is and what you intend to do with it.

It can get very confusing. The options are either Photoshop or Photoshop extended. The extended version has some additional features that you'll probably never use. Check out the Adobe site for the differences.

As Wayne commented a new version is due out in the Spring. so it may be worth while waiting a few months.

i have picasa but you cant really do a lot with it to be honest.
i was looking at elements 8 as i dont really want all singing all dancing stuff that i'll never use.
ive never used photoshop before so elements sounds good for me.

I use elements 7 and find I can do pretty much everything I want with it, last time I checked it was £39.99 from amazon.
