as tiled i have been offered these whats your thoughts thanks Paint Shop Pro 7 and X2 sorry title should read "good" not god

I've used Paint Shop Pro 7 for years and haven't bothered changing despite having later versions. PSP 7 will do all that you're likely to ever need in the way of photo editing.

The only downside to PSP is that it doesn't have the amount of on line tutorials that Photoshop has and if you wanted help on a forum like this, you'd find more people using Photoshop versions than PSP who'd be likely to respond.

Whatever editing programme you choose, stick with it for a while - it can become very confusing swapping and changing from one editor to another, particularly in the early stages.

mosa - 1st if you edit your first post, click advanced and you will be able to edit the title. (Click 'Edit" then "Go Advanced")

2nd - I have always found that Photoshop Elements more than enough for my needs, cheap and plenty of info about how to use it.

Changed the title for you.

For an absolute beginner Googles free Picasa is easy to edit with. Once you get used to how you want to change things it can be a bit too automatic in the changes it makes so that would be the time to move on to paintshop pro or elements etc.

I was discouraged from Picasa after I read this, which is part of their T&C's.

Thats 'web albums' - internet sharing of pictures which you don't have to use just for editing. Nothing to do with pictures on your computer.

I think that's all only if you use the Picassa web albums to host the finished images, not if you just use Picassa as an editor and/or library type tool.

IMO, Photoshop Elements does almost everything the amateur needs from an image editor with the possible exception of the channel mixer for more control over greyscale (B&W) conversion. PSE7 is available for around £50 for a genuine boxed PC copy.

I'd have to give a :plusone: for photoshop elements 7 (PSE7). You can get it from amazon for £39.99 brand spanky new.

play with the free beta of lightroom 3 and see if you like it, if so buy 3 when it comes out and treat the beta as a trial :D

Agree with that. Lightroom is pretty easy to pick up and there are loads of guides and videos giving tips online. Download the free beta and you cant go wrong. Like it, buy the full version later, dont like it, just uninstall it.

I have noticed that Lightroom 3 handles my raw files off the 50D a lot quicker than Lightroom 2 did.

I am also a newbie to editing, I used the free Picasa 3 for a while, I've just bought Elements 8, personally I love it, still got so much to learn though.

I've got Photoshop Elements 7 and find it does everything I want it to

I use an old copy of paint shop pro...but I prefer to get the image right first time on the click of the shutter.....

I use Paint Shop Pro X2 and find it perfectly adequate - and a lot cheaper than PS.

I've never really used PS in any of it's current guises though so I can't comment on how they compare. I have dabbled with older versions of PS and find X2 much more intuitive.

Hmmmm, i tried to use paint shop pro but didnt get on with it

Photoshop is the best in my opinion but everyone is different
