Ok, looking for a new phone.

Looking at the following?

HTC Desire
Smasung Galaxy
A blackberry? Which one?

Any Others?

Thanks

I've been asking myself the same questions for the past couple of weeks... I was going to get an iPhone 4 but after reading about Steve Jobs' saying "hold it differently" rather than saying that yeah, there is an issue, he can take his Apples and shove 'em where the sun doesn't shine!

For me, the Galaxy S is probably where my money's going to go... The HTC Desire looks really good but the Samsung definitely has the edge. :)

I also share Spiritflier's views regarding the Iphone, I was really impressed by the new design, expected it to be horrifically overspeced and awesome, watched its unveiling and felt quite a bit let down...
my current phone does it all already..
Still kept an eye on it though because I am yet to own an Iphone and thought this may be the one for me but wasn't drawn to it anywhere near as much after seeing its specs.
Then saw the "hold it properly" email and decided I still just wasn't ready to buy into apple as a handset...

I would go for the Galaxy S on that list... though the camera not having a flash is a bit of a downer... :( (then again if your on this forum you probably have a better camera anyway :P )

The Desire is a fantastic phone but won't be long until HTC no doubt release a newer version and stop supporting it (IE. like the HTC Hero).

The Motorola Droid X is coming out soon, looks amazing, also android. but no idea if it will actually come to the UK... (their previous Motorola droid didn't unless you ordered it in specially..)
If it comes to the UK that will be my next handset... unless I've gotten the Samsung before then :P

The new iPhone is still the phone that others aspire to beat. Let's face it, most of us have their phones in a case and there are rumours of a firmware update so it is a bit of a non issue. Looking at the resale prices of 3G / 3GS I think you could do worse than get one unless you really have Apple issues.

I really don't know looking at the tarrifs ect for iphones makes me think twice about owning one. My missus has one and although its a nice phone nothing overly special in my opinion.

I'd disagree that most have their phone in a case. Most people only have them in a silp if at all.

Either way the Samsung may be the most powerful but personally I think it exemplifies all that is wrong with touchscreen smartphones. Namely it trying to copy the iPhone. Other brands have been going for years and have their own distinct style (ie HTC) yet Samsung (who has it's own history) see fit to copy the design of the older iPhone, from the case to the UI...

I'd go with a Desire (and in fact after careful deliberation should be getting one shortly) unless you deal with a lot of emails, in which case a blackberry may be the better option.

Looked into the SE X10 as well?

iphone, best phone ive ever had.

If you don't want to go for an iPhone4 why not an iPhone 3GS?

I have to say using an iPhone and a Blackberry side by side, one for work and one for personal use, the iPhone just does it for me everytime! Couldn't comment on the others as I have no experience of them. :)

The Samsung Galaxy S had a slight edge over the HTC Desire, bigger screen and better, 16gb.
I've read reports that there are issues with the GPS on the Samsung but these are not wildly reported.
I really like Android plus the fact that you are not tied to one phone like you would be with the Iphone.
I've due for an upgrade at the end of August and I'll probably for a Samsung Galaxy S.
My T-Mobile pulse has been a great little phone and with Android 2.1, it's even better.
A lot of the manufacturers are adopting Android and the next few months are going to be interesting.

We bought both my kids one of these each at Christmas and they started as great phones and have now become an absolute nightmare, one has been back twice without a replacement whilst its away, the other has reset itself three times with a loss of all data, not at all impressed, and T Mobiles Customer service has left a lot to be desired...

I thought they were going to be a great little phone for the teenage kids, not so convinced now :(

Really?
The Iphone4 is finally a true smart phone as it can now multitask, this is something Android has been capable of since day one.
You have a choice of handsets, every few months the screens improve and the processors get faster.
Once rooted, you can install a much cleaner version of a custom ROM that tends to be faster.
The Iphone is for people who want simplicity and just want to get on and use it.
Androids is for those who want to squeeze the most out of their phone and not be bound to Steve Jobs way of doing things.

Sorry to hear about your problems, mine and a friends have been perfect.
I've not read anywhere that the model is problematic but clearly you do have a pair of lemons.

Desire rocks my world. Not sure I'd trust samsung.

I am very impressed with my Desire, excellent piece of kit.

if you go HTC you will have better support then from Samsung. Specially in the matter of firmware ( update to android 2.2)

I've got an iPhone 3G at the moment but iPhone 4 has really put me off...and I've had so many problems upgrading to iOS4 I just can't be bothered lining Apple's pocket anymore.

Samsung Galaxy S looks to be the pick of the crop at the moment....although I think I may just hold out a couple of months and see what crop of Android 2.2 phones appear.

I've got an iPhone 3Gs and it's great, works smoothly, has a fantastic touchscreen and have had no problems with iOS4 - but I'm not sold on the iPhone 4 and probably won't be till they fix it (like they did with 3G when the 3Gs came out).

My other half and dad both have samsungs and the touchscreens don't seem to be that responsive and the OS seems a bit too 'mobile phone' rather than 'smart phone'.

I've not had a go on the HTC but it seems to get rave reviews.

Best thing to do is spend an hour or so in the shop and get them to demonstrate all of them, have a play and buy the one you like - same advice as with cameras really :)

The good thing about Android is customs ROM's.
You can get them for just about any Android phone if you know where to look.
The advantage is that all the useless stuff you will never use is stripped out which helps to make the phone run faster and you can install apps onto the micro SD card (with the correct ROM).
If one is confident with rooting a mobile it's very easy to do well worth it.
Quite often the guys doing these will produce better default apps, the first custom version of 2.1 I installed on my Pulse had a calendar that was far better than the standard one and better than anything I've found on the market place.

This is the great thing about Android, it's a great OS and with all the custom rubbish providers install removed, it's even better.

Are you talking about Samsung phones that use Android?
Up until now their Android phones have not been good but the Galaxy S will change all of that.

There will be custom 2.2 ROM's that work with the Hero, this is the great thing about not having to wait for manufacturers to decide whether they will release them.

Totally impressed with my shiny new Desire and now I know Darran is a bit of a whizz with them, I know I have 'support' 10 minutes up the road too

Lol, Yv, I'm going into hiding ;)

What do you want to use your phone for ? to make phone calls, any phone can do that ..(even the Iphone 4)

if you want to take pictures, track the location GPS and upload to any social website most new phone are pretty good (iphone - samsung - htc)..

To edit your picture in your phone the Iphone is the best user interface and applications to do the job , you can even edit your video clips on the Iphone 4 (Imovie) ..

Applications and games I think the Iphone is the best all around . I did have the Samsung portal for 2 weeks and the application or games are not as good as the Iphone.

Go to the store and try the Phone before you buy ...

Regarding the Iphone 4 problems (not making calls) I have not have any problems at all , it works great , if you have problems loosing signal buy a case (this will protect you iphone as well ), i think apple is going to solve the problem soon with the new update 4.1 or 4.01 who knows..

Meh...I am at the end of an 18 month contract with T-Mobile with my g1. I really liked it and want to stick with Android. Figured the Desire has the edge over the Galaxy (and from what I can see the Galaxy that T-BMobile have at the moment is the Galaxy Portal rather than the Galaxy S, so do not want), but after a week of waiting have been told that the Desire's are on backorder and may take more than a few weeks.

I have informed them I shall take my custom elsewhere if the phone is not with me in the next 7 days. :annoyed:

I love my Blackberry 9700. I REALLY wanted an iphone but as we use the phone for work we settled for a Blackberry and I absolutely love it. No regrets about it whatsoever.

In fact I'm listening to music on it right now after having just dragged and dropped the files that I wanted into the folder I chose rather than being forced into using itunes (which I hate). Single best reason to avoid the iphone in my books.

T-Mobile will have the Galaxy S available soon, from what I have heard they are currently testing it on their network.
It's not their fault they are struggling for stock of the Desire,
both Samsung and HTC underestimated the demand for these phones and there is a worldwide shortage of them.
Both have ramped up production but I expect it will be a few weeks before they are flooded into the UK.
You could try the likes of carphone warehouse but they don't have the Galaxy available on T-Mobile.

I've been waiting almost a week now for buymobilephones to get the Desire in. Apparently they are getting a load in today so hopefully i'll get it tomorrow...

Seems HTC can't keep up with the demand for them, even remotely. They have been in short supply since they were released. HTC have actually said that some new ones will have a custom LCD made by Sony instead of the AMOLED screen that is normally in them because there just aren't enough around.

Samsung manufacture the AMOLED screens that HTC use in their phones.
Because they can't currently keep up with demand, it looks like they are keeping them back for their own phones until they can ramp up production of the screens.
Samsung are one of the biggest screen suppliers in the world and I find this hiccup a bit bizarre.

Yup. :)

I'm guessing it's either an underestimate on the number of units they were going to sell or a difficulty in manufacturing the screens themselves.

Apparently the new screens are going to be almost identical to the AMOLED screens... We'll see about that... It'll also be interesting to see how it affects the battery life of the new phones.

HTC is a great looking phone and you can do tweaks and Roms to get the best out of it etc. etc. Personally I am not into all that kind of stuff and want a phone that requires me to do nothing technical

For me though (surprisingly) iphone is still the best phone out there unless you hate Apple. Great user interface, ease of use through itunes sync and still holds great value on 2nd hand market when you get an upgrade. Also great camera (early reviews saying one of the best out there) and editing software, loads of games etc.

Unless you need something specific, the iphone really is hard to beat.

edit* (Mods, I will earn my Steve Jobs Jr. Status!)

You don't have to root the phone to have a good phone. Rooting is akin to a much more extreme version of jailbraking iPhones. Some people like to fiddle with their phones and others don't. Personally I'm really not a fan of the Desire looks, the x10, HD2 and US EVO are much better designs but they all fall flat in other areas (not least that the EVO won't work over here...) so the Desire is the lesser of the evils.

Because you don't want an iPhone you are an Apple hater? That's a bit like saying I don't want a Nokia N95 so I must be a Nokia hater... People want different things from their phone so just because iPhones aren't right for you doens't mean you hate Apple.

Didn't mean that, but we all know there are people who refuse to buy an Apple product, because they dislike the company. Not saying anyone who does not have an iphone is an Apple hater, but I was just pointing out in case OP disliked Apple that IMHO would be the only reason I could find for not going iphone 4, as I truly believe the antenna issue will be sorted this week in a firmware.

No I dont hate apple I just don't want a iphone everyone has one and everyone seems to moan about something with it.

Got to say I was talking to a friend recently and they commented about my phone (not an iPhone), we got discussing phones and she mentioned that most of the people she knows with iPhones hate them and are going to replace them as soon as possible. That sort of stunned me slightly as it's the opposite to most of the people I know. Just goes to show one single phone isn't perfect for everyone.

So my HTC Desire arrived today...holy **** I love it.
Hard to believe that it's a phone!

Awesomesauce!
