Hi everyone :)

I need to upgrade computer, I currently have a laptop that struggles with cs5 and Lightroom 4.
I'm happy to build a tower but unsure of specs to run efficiently.
I have a very limited budget :( though I could build it over a few months!
Or is a gaming pc ok? I have seen them on ebay for about 250.
Quite new to all of this so any help would be great. ..links to what I need etc..

Thanks

Paul :)

I recently upgraded my PC with the help of input from the TP community.

Here is what I said about my requirements:
My wife will use the machine to work from home and she's an Excel power user. I do a bit of spreadsheet and database work but not so much these days. I use Lightroom and Photoshop Elements but I'm not a heavy user so I don't need to focus too much on that side of it - just so long as it runs well enough. Neither of us is a gamer and we don't use the PC in the study for watching films or TV or anything like that. But one quirk is that the kinds of things she has open are often very different to the kinds of things I have open, and we often want to switch users without having to shut everything down.

And this is what I ended up with:
  • Asus H87M-E motherboard
  • Intel Core i5-4570 (3.2GHz) processor
  • 8GB RAM - 2 x 4MB - with scope to upgrade to 32GB
  • Nvidia GeForce 210 1GB graphics card - for the RAM if not the speed
  • Kingston 120GB SSD
  • 1TB SATA3 HDD transplanted from my old PC
  • Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
  • 24" Samsung monitor from old PC
  • CD/DVD RW drive (nothing fancy)
  • Onboard sound and cheap desktop speakers from old PC
  • Internal 52-in-1 card reader
YMMV but hopefully this is a useful starter for ten.

£593 built and delivered, incl VAT, from PC Specialist. Their website makes it very easy to tweak configurations and see what it does to the price. Of course it ought to be a bit cheaper to build your own. I'm not aware of any websites that make it easy to configure and price self-build machines, but hopefully someone else can help with that.

Hi Neil, I have a laptop on vista. 3 gig ram and only 250 gig hard drive that's almost full. I'll post in another forum tomorrow about how I save all my photos on external hard drive to clear it up a bit :)
