Yes
Right, I have a nice little question which some of you might enjoy answering. What is this lens?

So yeahh, I know it's Sigma and its an EF 55-200mm 5.6 but what on earth is all the sliding action about? Is that what older lenses do, that's presuming it's quite old? I actually have no idea, I just came home to it being left by my aunty...

Anyway, I look forward to what you have to tell me

It's a old style 1 touch zoom, may or may not work on your camera, give it a go. Most old zooms used the same ring for zooming and focussing. The White curved lines on the body are a depth of field guide.

It works but I'm just so confused by the sliding action

My god that brings back memories.

I used to sell those (or something very similar) in the late 80s.

One touch zoom was my preference. The old 80-200 Nikon was an absolute beauty. I can't remember, I think it was f4.

The depth of field scale is very useful too. The trouble with that lens is it is quite slow at f5.6.

I've had a play with it and truthfully, it's a bit naff. I can't complain though, it was free

Does it work on your 20D? I have a Sigma 70-210 from about the same era that I got for my EOS600, but my 60D will have none of it.

I had an old Sigma 60-200 f/4-5.6 one touch zoom in Konica mount which was lovely to use. Both the focus and the zoom are butter smooth and really light, such a well balanced lens to use. It's a shame that I've had to retire my Konica FC-1 with an unreliable shutter mechanism as I can't use that, or the other two Konica Hexanon lenses I have for it on any other body.

I think there was an f4 ( cheaper) and an f2.8 push pull zoom. I had the f2.8, it was a terrific lens even though it looked like it had demolished walls ( it probably had)
Tough as old boots those old lenses.

I doubt I'm ever going to use it
It can go in the bag though, the bag I don't have yet

The push-pull zooms are great - for sucking in dust (works like fire bellows)... also if you're taking pictures where the lens is far of the horizontal they can tend to droop (or compress) under their own weight. You're giving me flashback nightmares about the old Sigma 100-300 I had... it's not pleasant at all.

Ahahh, well don't worry - I didn't ask for it and I don't intend to use it
I'll stick to the 55-250mm EF-S IS that I'm getting soon :D

Or the present day 100-400 L. I can't say I dont like the old zoom design, but there are just too many drawbacks.

It looks like the lens from a minolta SLR NOT A DSLR . If it is it fits on a sony DSLR because sony bought minolta now make DSLR'S which I own and has a minolta lens hope .

more importantly, how are the shots taken with it?

you have put it on and pressed the shutter, haven't you?!?

Of course I have, and what I got was a bit naff
If I dare go out with it, I'll take some shots to upload tomorrow

I don't want to catch HIV though

This they do, however they come into their own when handheld shooting stuff on the go.

Eurghh, had a little go with it today. I just deleted the photos they were so bad, that monster of a lens won't be going on my camera again any time soon
