Yes
I shoot with a D40 and would like to upgrade to something better, I do mainly nature photography so I want good fps but I am doing a couple of wedding in the near future and I'm going to start advertising myself for functions, parties anything so will be printing... and there is so much what can only be called propaganda out there about cameras and what they all do or don't do, I thought I'd ask here and get some proper advice of the people who will tell the truth and not try and sell me the biggest and the best with the most stuff in it,

if it makes any difference, I like to think I know how to use my camera and always shoot on manual unless a very quick point and shoot moment presents its self.

Any help or advice will be greatly apreciated,

Thanks Lee Harrison

I think if you give some idea of your budget people may be able to help you more.

I've not got a set budget, but mid-range... the new 7000 would be about top of my range

What have you budgeted for lenses or do you have some quality glass already? I mean there would be little point blowing your budget on a D7000 and then buying average lenses.

at the moment, I use a sigma 18-200 os, but I was going to upgrade after I get the body, I will need to save up again haha... one step at a time

You might find a good secondhand D2xs a good choice - unless you need high ISO - in which case the D7000 is probably the perfect choice....

At least add a 50mm f1.8 prime - so you can see what a sharp image looks like....

either D90 or D7000. I went D90 because of the cost and I don't regret it one bit. There is such a massive increase from D40 to D90 that you'll be blown away. ISO 800 on the D40 is somewhere between 3200 and 6400 to my eye. I'm regularly in the ISO 2000 range and on the D40 I'd have never chosen to use ISO 1600 unless absolutely necessary.

The D7k is supposed to be better yet, but I couldn't justify the extra cost.

If you get the D90 you could add a pair of primes for the price difference (50/1.8, 35/1.8)

Thanks,
Rick

Don't bother, there junk! get a Canon, or a pentax.

(sorry, my apologies, I have just read the ebay wet suit/bear advert and this kind of thing is now flowing through my head and your thread was the first that I clicked).

I'm going to stick with nikon, becasue I know them and I already have a couple of lens's and I can't afford to buy a whole new kit,

thanks for the advice, when I almost always shoot on 400 on my D40, seems just about right,

Thanks again Lee

If you are doing weddings, I'd suggest the D700.

It's out of your price range but I would say it was a necessary purchase for any wedding tog.

Not sure if this post is allowed, if not mods please remove.

I have two Nikon D2H bodies on fleebay at the moment, superb cameras well looked after, just upgraded to a Nikon D3S hence the sale. Very fast at 8 frames a second and ideal for weddings.

Again appologies if post not allowed.

D300 or two
people have shot with those at weddings :)

I currently have a D60, if I ever got the chance to upgrade I would go for the D300s as I don't see the D90 as a true upgrade, but that's my choice. You should really try each model for yourself.

The D90 is great but once you have seen the low light performance of the D7000 and difference in IQ you will be impressed. But best to invest in glass, not point having a great body and not a decent lens. The D90 is capable but if you can stretch to a D7000 I would say do so!

You have a LOT of homework to do because there are so many choices.....

Probably the vest VFM that combines good fps, build, IQ and low light performance is the D300, then the D90 as used buys - £600-650 for the former is a lot of bang for your buck.

S5 pro is a good buy for wedding stuff due to fantastic dynamic range - £459 will get you a good used one.

If build and fps is key, D2x - unbelievably tough and well thought out. Up to ISO 1000 it's fine. Cheaper than a D2xs too and the firmware upgrade to get it to D2xs level is a 2-minute job.

For anything in current tech level then you're looking at around £1000 or upwards and that's when you have to work out what it is you want to achieve and whether the it's cost-effective :)

why not a used D700, ive done a few weddings with mine and had some great shots. ive been very happy with the camera since i got it,ive had a few nikons starting with a D50 then D200 and feel more comfortable with the D700 with grip, function layouts are good and feels like tipical great nikon quality. i love it feels nicer than some of the cheaper brand boddies out there, i tried them and stuck with NIKON :)

D90 is cheaper now and a really good body, get a couple of good lens with it, would be better than spending all in a pricey body!

Whats IQ, im looking for a D90. It was 500quid for a body only last week. Just gone up to 530 ?#@!

IQ=image quality.

I've just bought a reconditioned d90 for @440 with 12 month warranty, have a look on fleabay.

I upgraded from a D50 to a D90 and I love it. Such a good camera. You won't regret it.

Thank you for all the advice, I'll have to have a good look around and think, I may come back with a few more question haha..

Thanks again Lee
