Hi

I realise this may have been discussed plenty of times before, but things move quickly in the electronic world.

I am looking to invest in a decent monitor and wondered what the opinions of the forum members were with regard to this subject.

There is also the dilemma of whther to go big and have one screen or use two smaller screens with one of a very high quality.

Your thoughts and observations will be welcomed

Personally, a single, quality monitor, two take up a lot of space. I also think you only end up using the better monitor anyway. The Dell Ultrasharp 24" has good reviews at a reasonable price point.
 
Just to complicate matters, now that Windows 7 is becoming more the standard OS, and its compatible with touch screen monitors, has anyone any thoughts on this way to go.

ATM the touch screens are ridiculously expensive, but its thought in the trade that the prices will drop dramatically by the end of the year. Do you think there are any advantages in touch screen and is it worth waiting till the prices are at a reasonable level.
 
The Asus seems to be a competent monitor. I use the 22" model at home however the picture quality is, in my opinion, not in the same league as the Dell I previously suggested. The Dell is however nearly twice the price. The 22" Asus I can recommend from personal experience and I have no doubt that the 24" is similar, it does all that I need but adjustment is limited and the controls are fiddly to use.
It depends what you need and your budget will run to but, if you can, try to see one in use before deciding.
I'm not suggesting you buy one but if you have the opportunity, try to see the Eizo colour edge monitors in use, they are truly amazing (although I would need a second mortage to buy one).

2nd hand dell 2209WA, about 170 on ebay ish.

the number of screens is personal preference, i use 2 at work and it feels like ive cut a hand off when i use 1 at home.
 
It's always best to try and save a little on the monitor purchase and put it towards a colour calibration unit (flog it after you're done with it if you want to make back some of the cash).

Also if you can, try to go for an IPS unit instead of a TN panel but nonetheless calibration will make even an average monitor give better than average results.

I wouldn't touch a Dell U2410 personally. I recently spent ages looking for a decent monitor and spent £400+ on a HP 2475w (I think) after reading lots of good reviews only to find that when it arrived there was a green/pink tink on the screen from left to right when looking at anything white. The Dell and Hp share the same panel apparantly and the techie I spoke to at Ebuyer said they had lots of Dell's sent back with this issue.

In the end I went for a 2209WA and it is a cracking screen, slightly smaller but half the price of my original choice. For a second screen I use a cheapie PC world 23" Packard Bell, viewing angles are poop but it actually calibrates very well.
 
IMO a decent IPS or PVA panel is worth the extra over the budget TNs, I find colours are much more accurate, viewing angles better, and its generally more pleasing to look at. The U2410 is a great monitor and I wouldn't read too much into the troubles pseinor1 had with his HP as the vast majority of them will be faultless.

I'm afraid the green -> pink tint from left to right seems to be a characteristic of the panel, which does vary in severity, not just the odd faulty one. For a £200 monitor I would have put up with it as the HP was a great screen (it took me a couple of days to notice the problem to be fair), but not for something that cost £400+.

I can highly recommend the NEC EA231wmi.

It's a 23 inch IPS panel, with a very nice picture, and has been well reviewed. I decided against the more expensive Dell/HP options while there were still problems with those monitors.

Costs about £300 last time I looked.
 
Currently using the Dell 2209WA as well. It's a great monitor, no backlight bleeds etc, colours are accurate, stand is great. The only thing it lacks imo is a better resolution (its 1680 x 1050) but full HD would have been nice. Haven't checked out the latest monitors but the 2209WA is a good buy for £200ish.
