logged onto my client pc this morning.. when it started up my desktop had completely gone. I had to reconnect my Outlook to the exchange server, all icons and shortcuts on the desktop were gone, all bookmarks etc in IE & firefox were gone.. it was like setting up a new user?!?!

But if i went into docsandsettings > Leigh > Desktop.. then all my icons and shortcuts were in there?!?! I just copied them all back to my desktop and had to create my email signature again and i'm back to normal, but i just can't understand why it's kind of wiped all my user settings in the first place?

Nothing new installed or removed but i did quite a few windows updates y'day, but needed to restart after that anyway with no difference, so i'm at a loss?

any ideas what could have caused it and why?

gets even weirder (is that even a word?!?) this morning... after logging on i created a new advert for a local mag and emailed it to them. My pc then crashed while working in Sage accounts, so i restarted and my old desktop is back!! After searching for the advert pdf file again it so nowhere to be found on my hard drive?!? But i did save it because it's in the attachment in my sent items. Mental!!

I'd also check the processor fan is clear of fluff and spinning ok. Overheating CPU can cause weirdness leading to disk errors too :)

Is this on a domain?

Are you using redirected folders or roaming profiles?

ran chkdsk.. which came up with nothing.

fan is spinning well. Got Henry the Hoover in there to make sure

Clients are attached to a domain... this is a server i brought with me from a previous business where it served about 15 pc's.. now it only serves 2 of us. So we only share Sage and MS Exchange. Users don't have roaming profiles.. by that i mean, if i log onto another pc as me, i don't get my desktop etc..

Everything seems to be back to normal this morning..

Had a problem like this running win7 pro at work desktop would go back to default, log off and back again up comes the desktop.

If logging on and off don't fix it run regedit and goto

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\PrifileList"

You might see somethig like

S-1-5-21-1659004503-507921405-839522115-1129
S-1-5-21-1659004503-507921405-839522115-1129.bak

If you rename the first one to .temp or something like that the delete the .bak of the other line, log off and on again you should have your desktop back
