What lenses to go for?

So,

I've had my 550D for a week now, and I'm getting to grips with all of the technical terms etc, and hopefully going to a few events over the next couple of months so I can hopefully put into practice what I've learnt.

To do this slightly better, I'm also thinking of getting an extra lens or two so that I can accomodate for any situation :)

Currently I've got a 550D with the kit 18-55mm lens, and I'm looking at getting an EF 50mm f/1.8 II (Indoor + closer photography) and a 55-250mm IS (for Airshow photography and stuff like that).

I'll be using the camera as much as I can so from Holidays to Airshows and Car meets I'd like to be able to make full use of the camera with the different lenses, do you think those are good starting points?

Thanks.

Would agree with your two choices there

The 50mm f1.8 II is a complete gem! I have used it for about 90% of the pictures on my website, a real bargain!

The 55-250mm I haven't bought yet, looking at getting myself a 35mm lens first as I enjoy my street photography, but I have had a go at using it in my nearest Jessops and it seems like it could be a great lens. The IS is a bonus!

What kind of budget do you have?

Well I'm hoping to spend as little as possible really due to being early in to it, and I've seen from Kerso I can get both for just over £200, so realistically don't want to pay any more!

I did briefly look at the 75-300mm lens but it's had such poor reviews I'll be staying clear of it!

The IS on the 55-250mm would more than make up for the 50mm loss against the 75-300mm I would say, so defo stick with the 55-250mm.

I don't think you could go wrong with those two lenses to be honest :)

I've also got the 550D I only bought mine end of Jan and I have bought the 50mm 1.8 II lens and I love it a cracking little for the price, would recommend it to you for sure. I'm also looking at gettin the 55-250mm aswell sounds like it would make a good addition to what I've got already and what I want it for, I'm in to all sorts of photography landscape, wildlife, sports, live gigs and want to do portraits aswell.

If thats your realistic budget, then yes, probably the best bet is these 2 lenses. You could always hire a longer, faster lens for an airshow if you need.

Yes, it's not a lens I would recommend, esp with the 55-250IS about, the Canon 70-300IS is a much better bet, but is more expensive

I started with a 550D and kit lenses and the 75-300 was awful, so steer clear from that for definite. I got a 55-250 IS and it's a great lens, sharp, fast AF and accurate. If you could find the 55-250 IS and 50 1.8 in the classifieds you'd get them for around £150 for the pair.

Not really naughty, I'm not touting for business and I still haven't decided whether I will be selling. If I do sell I will list them all in the classifieds section as per forum rules.
