wanting the camera mostly for landscape and potraits/family partys etc

so wondering what if anything would be my first lens's to buy...

thanks wendy,x
p.s links would be good too as i a new to all this thanks.x:nuts:

you don't even have your first lens yet - slow down! Wait till you've worked with your equipment and what you need or don't need will soon become obvious. Depends whether you want to be a photographer or an equipment collecor.

Agreed - work out what you actually need first, then buy it...

Though I agree with the posters above, some kind of fast prime (like a 50mm 1.8) wouldn't go amiss imo - useful for portraits and shooting in low light at parties etc without a flash

I agree with grum, especially if your wanting portraits which you can be very creative with, having a 50mm 1.8

If you are really lucky see what you can beg, borrow and steal.

I have "borrowed" a 18-80 and 70-300 from the farther in-law so I can decide what will go best with my kit lens. Only problem with this is they don't auto focus on my D5000 :-(

Everyone buys one of those..............and then sells it again when they realise it a) doesn't af on the D40 and b) isn't really wide enough

As AWP says, wait until you work out what you actually need before spending any more money

Or just buy stuff second hand and try it for yourself without really risking any money if you decide it doesn't work for you. How do you know what you need without trying stuff out?

The OP hasn't even tried the first lens out yet so until she's had a go it doesn't make sense spending any more money. When I got my first DSLR I had pre conceived ideas about what I wanted to shoot but fortunately didn't have the money to spend straight away because I soon found that my photography took a completely different direction.
