Hi all - forgive the newbie question :help: but I'm in the process of getting a 40D and am relatively new to the world of DSLR's.

I have a small budget (about £400-£500) and want to put together a range of lenses to cover as many "oportunities" as possible. I appreciate I'm not going to get anything super fantastic but am looking to the wise words of fellow forumites for the sorts of things I should be looking for.

I've had a good quote from Kerso for a nifty fifty so what else should I be adding to the collection?

If it helps I don't mind 2nd hand or "brand"

Thanks in advance to all those who take time out to help me along the way

i would get a tele lens, in that budget probably a sigma 70-200 f2.8 with a canon 50mm f1.8, and then funds depending something wide maybe? (never really used anything wider than the kit lens)

I'd second a sigma 70-200 F2.8 for a medium zoom + a sigma 1.4 TC if you can stretch the funds.

A few other options? You could probably pick up a used Canon 70-300mm IS for £300 & a used Sigma 10-20mm for £250
Regards
Paul

are you getting it with a kit lens? Personally I would say you should even though the 40D comes with the older non-is version (unless of course you find it with the new IS version) then I'd add a 55-250 IS and a 50mm 1.8 at which point I'd stop buying lenses until you've been out an about and seen what you like shooting and what you need to improve the shots your getting. It's never a good idea to rush out and buy loads of lenses as you'll probably land up with ones you don't want!

Thanks Alex - at this stage it is body only (plus BG-E2N battery Grip) ;)

If your getting body only, then it has to be:

Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5
Sigma/Tamron 70-200 f2.8

That might just breach your top budget, but then you have a good focal range from 17-200 covered. Then you can invest in more reach if you need it when budget dictates, or go for an Ultra-wide angle lens like the Sigma 10-22 or the new Tamron 10-24.

What sort of things do you like to shoot? Knowing this, might be able to advise on lenses better :)

I would have said, as others have, the 50mm f1.8 is essential kit for any canon owner... very versatile and super sharp for the money :)

I'd second the vote for the 55-250 IS, it's a cracking zoom for the money. It's the only lens that my other half ever has on his 30D, why not start with that and then decide where you are lacking scope.

The kit lens for the 40d is the 17-85IS everywhere ive seen it:thinking:

I love my 10-22, stay on the body most of the time, but prob out of your budget if you want others aswell. The Sig 10-20 is cheaper

Thanks for all the help guys - not sure if I've done the right thing but I've managed to pick up a canon 50mm f/1.8, Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8 and a Sigma 70-300mm APO DG Macro for around £300 in total.

Looks like 2 out 3 of these have been "recommended" :naughty: and the last one not so much but at least it allows me to have a case of GAS later  (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)

Now it just all has to arrive and I can get out snapping :woot:

Oldestswinger, i think you have a decent set of lenses there. I think the first one you may look at upgrading is the 70-300 but to start with, i think you have done well.

Mike
