I am fairly new to the SLR world. I have my nikon d60 with the lens it came with 18-55 vr. Now its time to get myself a little more kit but i do not really know anything about the techno jargen and dont really know where to start. Confused!

Iam keen on photographing landscapes and more close up shots, animals, people, sports including winter sports.

If anyone could help point me in the direction of some quality lenses that wont break the bank i would be very thankfull!

I have been into photography for only 6 months and know where you are.
My first purchase was a Sigma 150 Macro, it cost around £400 but what a lens.
In addition to the Macro i purchased a Sigma 70-300 4-5.6 for around £130 and it is a nice lens for the money.
My next lens is going to be a Tokina 12-24 for around £330.
A good tripod is also handy, i have Manfrotto 190XPROB + 804RC2 Head.
Hope this is of some help, i have found this web site by far the best with great forums and lots of people willing to help.

Good luck

Nikon 50mm f\1.8, Super cheap, super sharp and excellent for portraits. They can be had brand new for around £70..

For a bit more reach..

Sigma 70-300 apo.. again, nice and cheap and good IQ, creates some lovley bokeh at 300mm end too!

so why do you need more kit? the lens you got not good enough?
it doesnt zoom in enough?
it doesnt zoom out enough?
what budget you got?
what do you want most?(ie lens for landscape, new all rounder etc)

not querying why, just trying to get an idea of what sort of lens you will need next:thumbs:

hi hop..

your kit lens will do a good job for landscapes and people/general walk around stuff.for close up shots, you can't beat a dedicated macro lens, and depending on how close you want/need/can get to the subject, will decide what focal length best suits your needs...in other words,if you intend shooting insects that spook easily, you might need to go for a focal length of 150mm,but having said that,i manage okay with a 105mm focal length...so something like the sigma 105 F/2.8 EX DG macro may suit you,but costs around the £300 mark.for animals and sports, something with a focal range of say 70-300 should see you okay.the sigma 70-300 F/4-5.6 APO macro super DG lens gets good reviews, and only costs around £150.

hope this helps

Can't help on the sports or people side of things, but for starters.

Tamron 17-50 (excellent)
Tamron 90mm macro (superb lens, there is a version with a motor out now for the D40, D60 etc)
Tokina 12-24, superb wide angle lens, also consider Sigma 10-20mm.

Landscapes: Wider angle generally required

Close up : Macro lens - or extension tubes, Raynox attachment or close up filters are a cheaper substitute.

Sports/Wildlife: Longer lens needed depending on sport/animal

It will but it won't autofocus. With a D60 you need to buy lenses with built in autofocus motors (HSM in Sigma's). Having said that carlzola above has this lens and doesn't miss the autofocus.
