What lens ?.

As I have said in another posting I am going to give Landscape a try. What would be the best lens to use with my D800 ?.

I know a pro photographer with the same camera who uses a Nikon 28-300mm almost exclusively and gets some beautiful images. I have a Canon so I don't have that lens available, my main lens is a Sigma 24-105 art, it's a bit on the heavy side but I love it.

Budget?

I really like my 28-105 - pretty old (made between 1998-2006) and dirt cheap (especially if you're just starting out) - got mine for about £80-90.

I've used it for a ton of stuff from astro, to landscapes to semi long exposures:

Nikon 18-35? Wouldn’t even notice it fitted to a D800 it’s so light!

Tripod with good head with a plate system that is capable of putting as much surface as possible under the camera. [Caveat, I have not used the D800 to know if its base flexes like my D7200].

I too have a Nikon d800 and I wanted to do landscape but only had a Nikon 24-77mm f2.8 lens with me. So what I did was take several photos and overlapped by a third on each, then stitched them together. seemed to work out well as below

On a full frame camera. like yours, something like a 24-70 mm will probably get the most use but it is really down to what you are after.

For landscapes (not my main pursuit) I use a 16-35, 24-70, 100mm and occasionally my 800mm F5.6 - they all have their place!

As you are finding, there are lots of different answers dependant on what look you want to achieve like. I have used focal lengths of 200mm and also between 16 & 35. A telephoto will give more compression and give a feeling of being in the landscape, whereas a wide angle will appear more detached and almost a "look at what I can see around me", more environmental. Hope this makes a little bit of sense.

Simple. Use whatever lens(es) you already have. If you find that it/they can't do what you want to do, then that will give you pointers as to what else would work for you.
