Hiya guys,

I'm hoping to get to brands for the final race of the bsb, was just wondering as ive never been brands (or shot bikes) what lens would be needed, my kit is in my sig below

Thanks in advance, Danny

Edit to say i'd most likely be hiring anything i need? Tc's? longer lens?

Hope you don't mind but I'm interested in this too - though mine is for cars/drifting.... Sorry I couldn't add anything useful.

No problem  i'd of probably done the same if you beat me to it ;)

Is yours for at brands aswell?

No, it's a little too much of a trek for me from Brisbane :-D mines for a drift weekend this weekend - day and night driving, practice on Friday afternoon. Should be brilliant and I can't wait!

what's your budget>?
for cropped sensors people rate the 55-250 for much cheapness but of course you're on FF
any tc on a f/4 lens might not be worth having for this purpose

I had the 55-250 on my 1100D  but sold both now, budget is say £100 to rent?

I use a sigma 120-400 and got frame filling shots at silverstone for the moto gp this year,

Having been to brands, which you can get closer to the track I'd go with the 70-300,that will do you just fine there :-)

I went to Cadwell Park for the classic bikes last Sunday with my 70-200. It was fine but I was able to easily stand at the side fencing with nobody bothering me as it was rather empty.

Busy times at Cadwell normally require a converter for a convenient place to shoot :)

A 3 day hire for our 100-400 would be £45 (excl postage) to give you an idea.

Thanks for all the responces guys, think i will probably rent the 100-400 so ive got a bit extra reach if i want any close-ups etc, and keep my 70-200 handy if i find myself closer to the 200 mark for the sharpness of the lens

Sorry for sounding ignorant but what company is that?

Thanks Danny

Full GP circuit so if you move around a bit you will get quite a few areas with no fencing. As for which glass, couple of examples

200mm 2.8 handheld on 7d
MG2675-XL.jpg

same set up as above but using the 1.4 mk3 extender
MG4421-XL.jpg

70-200mm 2.8 mk2 handheld on the 1Dmk4 (1/320, f/6.3, iso 100, 200mm)

as above but with the 2x mk3 extender so 400mm (1/400, f/6.3, iso 125, 400mm)

Excellent shots David, i always love looking at your work, the full frame shots on the 70-200 have they been cropped at all? and do you have media access or are you behind the fence?

Thank you kind sir - last two have been cropped a small amount (not a lot though) all spectator side for the bikes, around the GP part of the circuit the fence is waist height so plenty of clean action shots to be had.

So it should be quite feesable really on a 5D3 that i could get some good shots with my 70-200, forget renting a lens, save myself some money and just enjoy the day, there should be enough detail from that camera should i need to crop at all

Would you mind sharing your settings on the last 2 please david?

Danny.

Danny.

Without a doubt mate, and just to really prove the point - these are some that my wife took last year (Sony body) using just the Tamron 90mm handheld - not just for macros

Hi Danny

www.lensfettish.com

They are a camera lens hire company and offer a fantastic service at very competitive prices (although I am bias as I work there!).

Give me a shout if you need anything.

Ive been to Brands a few times now and I manage fine with the 70-200 f4l most of the time.I have a 1.4x convertor that comes in handy but theres only really two places I wished I had a bit more reach and thats stood at the side of the medical center shooting them exiting surtees and exiting paddock hill bend. circuit map http://www.brandshatch.co.uk/circuit-information.aspx

a Sigma 120-300 f2.8?? I didn't know this existed!
damn I want to try one out!

It does and I'm loving mine!
Shall be at Brands Hatch on the 21st for the Btcc final and shall post up some pictures using mine.
It makes a great Lens for Brands hatch and takes a tele convertor well.

My suggestion is that its likely to be like the black hole of calcutta... with rain to boot.

If you are hiring, try to get something f2.8 if you want some decent results... or f4 at a push, don't end up at f5.6

I use the canon 300mm f/4 at Brands all the time (albeit on 1.6x and 1.3x crop cameras) and its excellent there, including in spectator areas.

I have my old Canon 300mm f/4 (non-is) for sale actually, but you'll probably not want to par with £400 for one race event!

try the 1.4 tele-converter, it gives a great extra reach with very low penalties in terms of IQ.

How did you get on? I went to the Showdown at brands this weekend. I took my 550d and a basic canon 50-250mm IS zoom lens.

I managed some decent ish shots, but I am really in the market for getting something better quality and that allows me to shoot some of the longer range points around the track.

But if you know where to shoot from you can get some half decent results:

I got lots more obviously but I have not had the time to process them yet!

Hope you had a good day / weekend

Great photos bdigital, just goes to show that you don't need to have a media bib to get photos!

Didnt get too go in the end, the guy i was going to go with is a marshall there but was ill over the weekend so had to cancel :(
oh well theres always next year :)
