What lens

Can you give me some advice I have a nikon D80 Im after a lens which will take close up pix from a good distance away of dogs in fast movement and biting biting sleeves.
Will be looking at mid to nikon range.

Any advice would be much appreciated

What's your budget? You can get a second hand 55-200mm VR for about £120.

As Dman says, it all depends on your budget be it £150 or £1500.

Well, you can get the 55-200mm at a good price, or you have the 70-300mm Nikon VR which will set you back about £300. All but one of my lenses are second hand, I've never had a problem.

For that I personally would go for the 70-300mm. Have a look on the classifieds on here, there's always a few popping up.

Problem is you want to shoot a fast moving smallish subject - to do that properly you need to spend a lot more on the lens. More expensive lenses are sharper but more importantly for you are faster to focus. If you don't have the right tools for the job you're stacking the odds against yourself. Might be better to be patient - save - and buy the correct tool for the job rather than be dissapointed and want to upgrade.

You need to up your budget to £1200+ to do it properly.
