Hi
I have a nikond300 and a 18-55mm lens and a Nikon 75-240mm F4-5.6D Telephoto Autofocus what lens do you suggest to get close shot of birds without getting to close and spooking them
cheers

Please be patient, you will get some help but some more info would help.

Are you talking about shooting in you garden or elswhere?

I think between 300 and 400 mm is widely regarded as the minimum you need. Im not a Nikon owner so wouldn't like to recommend something ive never used.

What budget are you looking at?

I'm looking around for something Canon for the same job and the general view is that 400 is minimum and the longer the better, the more I look and procrastinate the more it looks like I'll have to spend :) If you're like me you want to get the decision right because your OH is likely to say something if you get it wrong . . .

both in the garden and out and about new to this so just getting and idea of what i would need and not sure on the budget yet.
cheers

If trying the garden first set up a feeding area. You can get a cheap wireless trigger from FITP and set the camera on a tripod. It's a well used technique to get close without expensive glass.

Not sure if the wireless trigger willl work with the D3000 though, if not try a pop up hide and lots of patience waiting quietly

yes i would agree the OH has the final say and i dont want to spend massive amounts when i have just started it was hard enough convincing the OH to let me buy a DSLR in the first place so if i could get one on a budget that would be great news.
I just want the right lens without breaking the bank if you know what i mean.
kind regards

Its almost impossible to recommend with out an idea of a budget or we could all say 600mm but that would set you back £6-7.5 K.

On a budget maybe something like a Sigma 120-400 OS, not used one but plenty on here have so maybe try the search (although its not the most helpful)

I think that very few people these days have a garden big enough to make your current lens useless, but if you are lucky enough to have more than maybe (roughly) 65ft then you will need more mm. Whether that comes from a teleconverter for your current lens or a new lens completely you have to decide once your budget is sorted. I have a cheapie 70-300mm Sigma for the D1x, took these with it yesterday from about 30ft or so - they are maybe 50% centre crops. With better glass you can get further away and crop more it would seem... I also got some neat ones from about 50ft but they all have tree in the way!

You can get your hands on a second hand sigma 50-500mm for approx 400 to 600 quid. I currently have one of these and it does the job reasonably well for the price.

See, now I realise it's normal for a fairly decent lens, but those numbers really scare the poo out of me. *Never* would I have contemplated spending that much on a lens, and I still would not dare ask Mrs A to allow it either...

we could do with a budget in mind, as far as i can tell its a consumer budget which would mean around £400. i would say get a 70-300mm but it still wont be long enough unless you have a small garden.

Couple of options really

50-500 sigma
120-300 2.8 sigma with a 1.4 tc
70-200 2.8 sigma with a 1.4tc (might still be a bit short though)
70-300 although i found the af on these unuseable

Shoot me for going off topic but after seeing big bird
