It's more about getting the people positioned correctly and having enough space. Avoid using very wide lenses if you can as the distortion can cause a headache. Something around 24mm and enough distance from the group should do the job nicely.
i recently bought a 28mm f2.8 for my 400d which also has a 1.6x crop factor and it is wide enough to shoot groups and landscapes but without the distortion and it is tack sharp and not very costly
Mine is full frame so I was concerned about the field of view with 1.6. It's difficult to visualise so I thought I'd bump the thread until someone with a 1.6x crop could help
