What lens to shoot sport with a Canon 5d

Hello all,

I am looking into getting a lens to shoot amateur rugby with my 5D. The majority of matches I will shoot will be in the afternoon, my budget isn't huge, so I am looking for a zoom lens that is good value that will be up to the job.

100-400mm is fantastic and I wish it'd fit on a Nikon, it's that good :)

Maybe take a look at a Sigma 70-200mm - you can get them cheap (especially the early, non-OS versions) on the used market. The 100-300mm f/4 Sigma is a great lens also, but rare these days.

Have a look at the Canon 70-200mm f/4 also; cheap, brilliant optics, lightweight and good AF.
 
I was hoping someone would say the Canon 70 - 200 f4 as my budget is somewhat limited. I was thinking 200mm would be enough reach from the sidelines?
 
I love the 70-200 f4L !!!

Use it whenever I can! It's lightweight! Fast focus!! Super sharp! And a bargain at the used prices of £350!! For the money you would not regret it!

I am afraid he would regret it, because f4 in low light will not be good enough.

I have shot rugby and football and when you get to the autumn/winter months and it starts getting dark early you really need an f/2.8.

I have used a D300s with a Nikon 70-200 2.8, 6400 ISO, and just managed a shutter speed of around 1/250s and it was under floodlights.

So depending on how early they kick off and how late they finish and how dark/gloomy it will be you may get away with the f4, BUT if you get the bug you will probably wish afterwards that you got the f2.8 in the first place....I know I've been there :lol:

Same Issue I use a Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 and a Nikon d300 same thing really and I only get 1/250 It's no Problem just put the exposure to -0.7 will give you about 1/125 more then Put the camera onto Shutter Pri. Set the Shutter Speed to 1/400 Does the Job ISO 6400 Exposure -0.7 - Quality RAW and Jus lighten the Images afterwards also remember use auto Iso but after the first math use one of the Night Images you taken put it In Picture Control and Make a White Balance present to Night shooting , Enjoy !!

ermmm no, always max out ISO before even thinking about underexposure! That's the perfect way to get the most noise into the shots.
 
Canon 70-200mm would be a perfect choice! Since you said that you had enough budgets, avoid buying second hand.

Nothing wrong with buying 2nd hand, providing you know where its come from.

I have bought from the classifieds on here and have been over the moon with my purchases including a Nikon 70-200 f2.8.

At least buying them from people on here you know that they look after their gear.

If and when I have the cash and someone on here is selling something I need/want then I won't hesitate in buying it if I am happy with it.
 
Ah...this is where the crops are good...the 1.6x on my 50d goes well with the 70-200 f4L...and I use my 5d with my 24-70 f4L...

You might find the ff of the 5d short on the 70-200...
 
70-200 on a crop is about the minimum for sideline sports, so on FF you're going to struggle.
Just shoot for the best image quality you can and be prepared to crop. What's the output medium? If you're not expecting to be producing 20" prints, then cropping shouldn't be an issue.

My general advice would have been, the 5d's AF system isn't really up to sports and that FF isn't buying you an advantage either.

But with good technique, you should get some good results.

Thanks for the advice, I think I will have to give the 70 - 200 f4 a pop as I can't afford the 100 - 400 at the moment. If it's not up to the job I will just have to save up.
