Hi guys,

What lens would be good to hire for a trip to Paris?

I have the 18-55 and 55-250

I was thinking of a wide angle, like the canon 10-22? Or would a fish eye be better?

Okay great.

Should I look at hiring anything else, or should I be cool with everything I have.

You've got your bases covered, walkabout, telephoto, and a wide-angle is all that's missing! Just don't get carried away with it like I did when I went (a lot of shots were far, far too wide, and the subject far, far too small :D)

When I went to Paris in the summer all my keepers were with a super wide (tokina 12-24) or 70-200 f4 is. The wide mainly for when I was walking round and the telephoto for on the tour bus which gave great perspective and shots that would not otherwise have been possible. If your interested you can check out my paris street photography set on flickr

18-55mm IS or none-IS? If the latter, get a walkabout too if you are going to do lots of photography. I'd go for the 24-105, but others would say 24-70. It'd be worth it.

If you've got the IS it is less pressing, but it might still be nice to have.

I do have the IS version.

Do you still suggest a longer walk about lens, such as the 24-105?

Spent last weekend there and didn't take the 24-70 off all weekend (on a FF body). Partly laziness and partly because footzoom was an option so I used it! Had there been fewer people around at the base of the Eiffel Tower, I would have done the clichéed fisheye shot but it was heaving and my need for an ice cream was greater than my need for that shot!

Of where? Due to a dodgy knee, we only did a few of the sights - Sacré Coeur, Eiffel tower, Notre Dame and the Palais de Luxembourg. Give me a little time and I'll shrink a few down to posing size, get them up on flickr and post them.

Here's one of Notre Dame at night.

They're amazing lenses, but you lose a fair bit of width - which you will probably use. But if you've got the 10-22 then that isn't a problem if you don't mind switching more.

The 18-55mm IS is probably good enough that you can save the money though.

(Get the 24-105mm!)

24 on a crop body may not be wide enough.

A couple of other tips on Paris (as I found it!)...
It smells like a multi storey car park stairwell, with a hint of sewers on many of the streets as a bonus.
The shady walk up to Sacre Coeur was haunted by fairly aggressive charity beggars who (claimed to be) were deaf and wouldn't give up. They had minders with them and you wouldn't want toi mess with the minders!
There were No Photography signs up inside Sacre Coeur, although I'm told that's the exception rather than the normal rule - maybe there was a service of some sort going on?
The little green man at pedestrian crossings seems to mean cross with caution! You (as a pedestrian) may have priority but you'll still lose any argument with a bus, car or bike.

He's getting a 10-22 as well, which makes that moot.

To quote the OP, "I was thinking of a wide angle, like the canon 10-22?" so, he's THINKING about a 10-22 rather than definitely getting one.

I spent a few days in Paris a few years ago, all I took was an 18-200 VR in Nikon flavour. A 10-20 would have been nice for a few shots, but I was happy with the Nikon. I think you can overdo the wide angle shots sometimes.

Hi Nod,

I have just checked out your shots. Nice work.

Can I ask if you used any filters or anything for the skies?

The reason I ask is that I only have a CPL filter and I would hate to blow all of my skies out, which generally is the case when shooting in the UK, when I shoot buildings and have them correctly exposed.

No filters used - not even the CP that I took but forgot I had in the bag!

No PP done to the shots apart from a resize and sharpen.

I went to PAris last year for a week and loved it, just so much to do.
I took my Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC and a Canon EF 70-300mm IS USM.
These work well as the 17-70 worked well as a walk about and the 70-300 was great from the tour bus and zooming on aspects of Architecture on buildings. A 10-20 would have been a useful lens to have.
You will enjoy your self there, so much to see.
I will try and post some pics on here

Paris is great for bokeh and portraits.

50mm 1.4 or 1.2 IMO.
