Hi, Just changed from Olympus OM-D to a Canon 7D with a Canon EF 17-40mm F/4.0 L USM. ( My first Canon )
I follow the British Super Bikes and other Motor Sport and have looked at the following.
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L IS USM
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 L IS USM

Any help / advice would be much appreciated
Peter

Depends what your budget is and whether you are accrediated photographer. The reason why I ask is, if you have to contend with safety fences then you need for than 200mm for the majority of the tracks.

Silverstone and Brands I'm shooting with a 300mm f2.8 and TCs, so anything upto 600mm not including the crop factor.

As you your lens suggestions, 100-400mm is still one of canons best selling lenses, a tad old now, so the IS system 1st generation, but if you get a decent copy still packs a punch. By all accounts the new 70-300mm L is very good and sharp.

Other lenses to consider are the sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS or the cheaper 50/150-500mm lenses although might struggle because of the f6.3 aperture at 500mm.

If you're accredited then you could get away with a shorter zoom, but it depends on your budget which seem to range from £500 to about £1600

And don't forget the Canon 300 F4 IS as well ...

I use this and a 70-200 @ Oulton Park and most of the time you're fine, there are occasions where more is required though.

I popped down to Brands a while ago and Pete gave some great advice and I ended up using the 300mm most of the time and still struggles at times...

The 70-300L is getting some very good reviews and s worth a look at, but I would say, once you get a prime, then it's very addictive (just wish I could afford a 2.8 :'()

My 1st action photograph lens was the 300mm f4 IS and combined with the 1.4x TC met all my needs until I upgraded to its bigger brother the f2.8 version and I still use it today.

Thanks for the advice,
what about 70 - 200 IS F2.8 with the latest 2x TC.

Depends which version of the 70-200mm f2.8 IS

MKI nope
MKII with MKIII TC might be OK, but autofocus significantly hit and IQs not as good as say 300mm f4 (on its own or) + 1.4x TC which would be significantly cheaper.
