What lens (Nikon user): keeping my 18-200 VR as it's a great walk about, day lens.

Thinking of getting rid of my primes 50mm and 35mm, although they shoot brilliant, it's not for me the primes.

Main shots would be of babies, toddlers, indoors and outdoors. Something sharper than the Nikon 18-200VR, quick Auto Focus, I like the bokeh from my primes.

Your best option is the Nikon 24-70, failing that the tamron 2.8 lenses.

I find the primes wonderful for kids though, and would not be parted with my 50mm.

Thanks

Due to budget I'm going to go for the tamron 28-75 2.8 non bim version
But will part with the 50mm

Can't remember the last time I used it and probably taken less than 50-100 shots with it.

Ive just got an 18-200 and first impressions are wow but thats probably because ive never had anything bigger than the kit 18-55, loving the zoom and flexibility. I was looking at also getting a prime next either a 50 or 35. Can you elaborate on what you're not keen on about them?

Nikon 17-55mm.... designed for DX, brilliant quality, as sharp as the 24-70 and keenly priced on the used market. The best DX zoom available.

I would second Pats view...the 17-55 is a really good piece of kit...

If only budget permitted

Just sold my 35mm for a mere £120 :(
That's to fund a compact which I need

Decided to keep the 50mm as its worth peanuts but it's light, small and produces great pics like the 35mm

Reasons why I got rid of the prime is because I prefer zoom
Moving kids inside and out so a fixed focal length is limiting

I'm just a bit lazy swapping lens around. A bit like having had the kit lens 18-55 55-200 I decided to plump for the 18-200

Tempted to try the tamron 28-75 but the non built in motor version

The new Sigma 24-70 HSM fast focus f/2.8 so I guess it will be great for the kind of shots you will be taking

For quick running kids a slightly wider prime might have been ideal as they can't run fast enough to get out of the frame.

Primes are great but you need to find the prime that works for you, you can't really replace a zoom with primes if you use a zoom equally much on most of its lengths. I have a 21,40 and 70mm Pentax primes and wouldn't ever get rid of them but if I want to go out for some unpredictable shooting I take the 16-50 as I don't want to swap around. However when I am out on the bike or camping or whatever the 21mm is the one that is on the camera all the time.

Here's a vote for the Tamron 28-75mm. An excellent lens even on full frame. You've obviously considered the implications of this focal length on crop, and you have the 'walkabout' lens covered - go for it !
