Hi have got a 7d with the 18-135 kit lens and would like to upgrade to better glass the kit lens is a great lens for me to use as a walk about lens when I'm with my family but would like something that can cover a bit more. I would like to have a go at bird photography, sports and maybe some model shoots, I keep looking at the 70-200 L lenses but don't know which one out of The f4 or f2.8 mark 1 would be better for someone still getting use to there camera would be better, and if there is other options I've over looked.

Sorry for the long post but any advice would be great thanks.

For birds I would be unsure that 200 will give you enough reach. Have you considered the Sigma 150-500mm? Or the renowned "Bigma" Sigma 50-500mm? I think either of these lenses will give that reach needed. Alternatively Canon do a (I think) a 80-400 (I may get corrected) if you prefer Canon glass, though I'm not sure if the Canon zoom is an L.
 
An absolute minimum for birds is 400mm, so the Sigma 150-500 is probably the best low cost option. It is a cracking lens, I used mine for three years before upgrading to a 120-300 f2.8 with a 2X
 
You might find the 70-200 a bit short for bird shots (though will be possible to get some great shots). I have (and love) the 100-400 L 4.5-5.6 as do many other bird photographers. Don't have either of the 70-200s but they would be great for sports, where you might find the faster 2.8 gives you more flexibility for faster shutter at lower ISO. Great for portrait shots too where the 2.8 can give you a more desirable out of focus background. Your call but if more of your shots are sports and portraits then maybe the 70-200 f2.8, which has great reviews, would be your best bet. Try it out on birds and see if restricts you and if so consider the 100-400 or a teleconverter is a cheaper option and many on this forum say they work well together. Best thing is to read a few more reviews and if possible try them out on your 7D. Happy hunting!
 
Thanks for the great replys as I want to use the 70-200 for a few different types of photography I think the bigger lens might not suit my needs, using a 70-200 with a Tc sounds like a great option though for the extra reach for birds, has anyone used this combo and what were the results.
