Yes
Hi

I have been given a Sigma 170-500mm lens. How do I find out what camera it is compatible with?

The previous owner didn't know! I know it doesn't fit my Sony a200

Thanks

why not take it to a camera shop and try to find out with their demo cameras

Maybe if you post a photo of the lens mount when you're able to, somebody on the forum will know. That's a pretty old lens

SOMETIMES the lens mount is written (OK, moulded) into the inside of the rear cap (the bit that fits over the mount).

Marbe Google whatever is written on the front — it may only have been made for one (likely Canon) or a few cameras which will narrow the field.

Thanks, tried this, but didn't really help as there are versions for various makes of camera.

I think that's a Canon EF lens mount, look at the pattern of the contacts
I thought that when I saw the picture. If not it is very like Canon EF !

Now we have ascertained it's probably a Canon... Are there any adaptors out there to get to to fit a Sony A Mount?

Done a quick Google, and find converters to E mounts!!

I think Sigma used to offer a lens mount conversion service, but it probably wouldn't be worth it given the value of the lens.
But they did make the lens for Sony A-mount, so the best idea would be to sell the lens you have (perhaps via ebay or to MPB) and then use the money to buy something specifically for your Sony A-mount camera.
If you look on the dyxum.com lens database and search for zoom lenses between 150 and 600mm, you'll find that there are 8 lenses that fit that criteria for Sony A-mount.

Alternatively, sell your Sony A200 and buy a Canon DSLR that it will fit.
I used to have the Sony A100 and A350 but moved to Canon partly for a more modern sensor and also for the availability of Canon-fit lenses.

No adapters for A mount, but it would fit FE mount with the Sigma MC11.

Maybe it could be used as a manual focus lens via a cheap adapter but unless the lens has an aperture ring you'd need an adapter with one built in.

Is there a serial number on the lens? May be able to find out from that

Thanks for all your help guys. Think I will flog the lens as cannot find any adaptors ( and I don't want to buy a new camera)

Thanks again
