Hi guys.

Im looking to get a new lens for my girl friends Cannon EOS 500D. At the moment we'v just got the standared 18mm-55mm lens. We'r wanting to upgrade to a zoom lens but the budget is tight to say the least.

Iv been looking at these 3 lens's and would like your opinion on the best one.

Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO

Canon 75-300mm f4.0-5.6 III EF (none USM)

70-300mm f4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro

So as you can tell our budget is around £150. Really hope you can help.

Thanks
Luke

Welcome to TP :)

Best budget tele-zoom is the Canon EF-S 55-250mm. Great lens for the money (around your budget) very light and best of all it has IS

:plusone: On that! Best lens for the price you want to pay!
I can post some pics taken with mine if you wish!

:agree: no question about it the 55-250mm is the way forward on your budget.

Another vote on the 55-250mm here, I've used it a couple of times and it's a nice lens, compliments the 18-55mm brilliantly!

It's interesting to see we have all ignored the original question

OK, here's my twopennyworth.

Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO. Rubbish, hated it with a vengance. Soft as hell over 220mm.

Canon 75-300mm f4.0-5.6 III EF. Better, but AF was very s-l-o-w!

70-300mm f4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro. Presume you mean the Tamron, OK, but as before the AF is very slow, and again soft at the top end.

Not true, a decent 70-300mm zoom is unrealistic on the stated budget. I have a 55-250mm Canon and I can only add to the praise heaped upon it by my fellow TPers above. For the money, it's an excellent piece of glassware.

I think canon 55-250 mm is really better than all the other cheap telezoom...

Thanks for all your advice guys, it's been really helpfull. Hadn't even seen that lens, but all the reviews seem good. Well i've ended up buying it, found it for £154 and not a refurb, cheapest around apart from ebay but I wanted a 12 month warranty.

Thanks again

Good price! I paid 180 for mine I think, loved it on my 400d. The IS is really good for the price.

Bought one cheap from a friend as a stopgap until I decided on what else to buy

Really surprised just how good it is and still havent bought a replacement, plastic mount seems durable too.
On a par I think with my old Sigma 70-200 apart from the constant f/2.8 and considerably lighter into the bargain

Canon 55-250mm IS

My next purchase possibly. I think i would prefer a decent buy not too expensive 18-whatever IS zoom but not sure what is out there. Any ideas guys? Don't want to spend a lot but anything from 18-135 upwards.

You got it. 55-250 IS is unbeatable for the money
