Hi people can anyone recommend a lens for a £100! I know its not much but have had a small rebate for an overpayment so I thought I could loose it on something for my canon 50d.
Thanks

50mm f1.8 for about £70 if you don't have that one...

Hi Rob

2nd hand Canon 55-250IS is within range of your budget.

Nifty Fifty

Canon 40mm "pancake" lens...

Not fussed about focal lens realy want to have quality of image and I do hear you get that with the nifty fifty although which one is the plastic one?

The mkII 50mm is the plastic mount, the mkI has the metal mount, but arries a premium with it...

The new 40mm is getting good reviews - you should be able to pick up a 2nd hand one within budget

CZJ Sonnar 135mm f/3.5, should be enough change for an M42-EOS adapter as well ;)

Don't worry about the silly stories and all that's written about the 50mm being made out of plastic. I'm not sure about everyone else but I don't use my lenses to drive nails in or drop them all the time.

tbf the build quality of the nifty isn't all that - i'm on my third one , its a super little lens for the price, but it doesn't wear well and is given to falling apart under heavy useage even without being dropped etc.

I did read a review just the other day but had mixed feelings on it. But the i suppose for £70 i cant go much wrong ay

I loved the 40mm pancake lens and its much better quality than the cheap 50mm.

Also over a stop slower! Unless you really need a tiny lens I can't see the point.

Perhaps, I just couldn't stand the rattle the AF creates on the 50. Just not the quality feel I enjoy using.... but many do like it.

if you can afford it a sigma 50 f1.4 is far superior - (ive got one of those as well) but you won't get that inside £100 unless you get very lucky on ebay.

the other option is a legacy 50mm and a converter - that will be MF only though which is no good for me as I really wanted AF

How does a Lens just fall apart  i'm not sure about the Canon 50mm, but the Nikon one is great for the price, i'm guessing they must be a similar build.

First one the front element just fell out one day (in the middle of a wedding - fortunately I had a back up)

The second one rolled off the coffee table and fell about 20cm gently onto a carpeted floor before disintegrating into three parts - I managed to clip it back together but it was never the same ( I got £10 for it on ebay S/R)

My current nifty is a mk1 bought second hand from before build quality was reduced for cost reasons - its been fine so far, but it doesn't get much use since I got the 1.4 (its basically just a back up)

I think the Nikon one is supposed to be superior build quality - the current canon is very cheaply made.

i have a tendency to think that the 50mm 1.8 is the lens a lot of people buy including myself but seldom use it
it sits in the kit bag right next to the 85mm 1.8 ( another lens that doesn't get much use )

the lens i do use quite a bit is the 40mm pancake
for a cheap lens it's quite impressive and unless you are doing that creative 1.8 very shallow focus thing 2.8 is just fine

if i had a 100 quid in my pocket to spend on a lens it would be the 40mm pancake
the results are better than you would expect for the price

Spend the £100 on something else if you don't know what lens to buy, there's no point buying something for the sake of it. Maybe buy an older manual focusing prime lens if you fancy something to muck about with.

I wouldn't say its buying something for the sake of it just because I don't know what lens to get.
I would like a new lens and just wanted some advise on what to look for!!
Think I might look at the 40mm pancake

This may seem a strange question, but one I'm surprised hasn't been asked. What kind of photography are you into. Because if for example you are into wildlife or birds, then a 40mm will be of no use regardless of how cheap it is
