Hi I have recently purchased a canon 5d mk1 which i love only problem being most of my lenses now don't work with this full frame camera. my main focus is going to be portraits and I have a 50mm which is great but i'm looking for another zoom lens that allows me a bit more flexibility- any suggestions? Budget is an issue so probably going to be looking for something second hand for around £600. thanks in advance for any suggestions :)

A canon 24-70mm f2.8 or 24-105mm f4 come to mind if you want a zoom, although budget especially for the 24-70mm will struggle, or are you looking for a slightly longer zoom like the 70-200mm?

For rough prices check out Mpb photographic, Mifsuds, Ffordes, Park Camera's, Digital Depot, Camtech are all good used dealers or keep and eye on the forums.

I assume you previously had a cropped body and EF-S lenses.

If it's definately a zoom you're after then you can't really go wrong with the 24-105 f4 on FF within your budget.

If you didn't want to spend quite as much, I can recommend the Tamron 28-75 f2.8

Not as well built but gives you that extra stop which is nearly always handy.

They go for around the £200 mark.

I know you said zoom, but think about an 85 1.8 to supplement your 50, its a beautiful portrait lens on a 5D.

I'd say that a 70-200 would be a better bet for portraits, although as mentioned the 85mm and 5D are great together.

This has to be one of the best walk around do most thing lens you could get 24-105 f4
you`d not go wrong buying one

+1 on that, got myself one for my recently acquired 5D mk1, the IQ is a significant step up from that of my 600D kit lens combo, it's reignited my passion for photography :-)

Another vote for the 24-105 if you just wanted a single walkabout lens.

I personally love the 17-40 / 50 / 70-200 combination of lenses.

I agree with this 100%.

My next lens purchase!

another vote for the 24-105 f4L, a fantastic lens, or any of the 70-200L's

I'd go for the wider aperture option if at all possible for a number of reasons.

Firstly buy an f2.8 and it's always going to be there if you need it for low available light shooting or when flash isn't allowed, secondly when stopped down it's probably going to be better than a f4 lens wide open and thirdly f2.8 gives you more control over DoF especially if you increase the distance to your subject and need as many options as you can get.
