Hi folks, how are ya? Been about 3 years since i got my first DSLR (Sony A200) and I have bought a Tamron 70-300mm lens and now considering getting my first fixed 50mm lens.

I have seen this one...

and also know that Minolta are good for the A200.

I am just hoping someone could recommend a good fixed 50mm lens?

To explain, I do a lot of car photography so will use it for that and also get married in October and want a nice lens to use when we honeymoon in Mauritius.

I would really appreciate some guidance :)

I have read good things about it and its nearly £50 cheaper which would help me as money is tight for the wedding :D

Just want a nice fixed lens to take with me on the honeymoon :)

Minolta 50mm AF f/1.7 no brainer, fantastic little lens, sharp as hell and excellent colours plus it's solid. They can be picked up on ebay for under £100. I started with a A200 years ago and sold off all the other lenses, guess which one i kept?

yes the sony one, sorry for the delay

I've also got the Sony f/1.8 50mm and it is a lovely lens, but remember that as your camera has an APS-C sensor it will be effectively about 75mm so it might not be that great for cars depending on the type of shots you're after. The bokeh on it is lovely though!

I would go for the Minolta, better build quality and razor sharp optics. Loads to bid on EBay and they should be around £75.

hi can you explain a bit more? sorry im new to this :)

it says on the product info that the lens is specifically for cameras with the APS-C sensor?

Basically if you have a crop sensor camera the field of view with the same length of lens is narrower than on a traditional 35mm film slr. A 50mm on a sony crop would give you the same field of view as a 75mm on 35mm film.

With the 35mm lens you have seen then you'd just get a wider field of view than with the 50mm. Roughly what a 50mm would feel like on a full frame sensor. Try both lenses out in the store and see which feels the more natural to you.

okay so they wont really make too much difference to my shots?

Basically I want a fixed lens to improve on my shot choice and also if it could improve the quality of my shots then that would be ideal.

does that make sense? :)

so just to clarify you would recommend both but the 35mm would have a wider view? :D

I've got the minolta 50mm got it off eBay for under£50 it's mf though which is a bit of a shame but at that price I can't complain.

Also it feels bulletproof!!!

I have the Sony 50mm 1.8 and really like! I bought the new Sony because I didn't want to deal with ebay and any potential problems with it.

The only thing that I don't like about the Sony is that the manual focus ring is a little loose. As a whole though, it's not that bad.

did you find it changed the quality of your pictures? what would be the advantages of buying it?

No, I found no problem with the pictures. It just bugs me that it's so loose. The advantage that I can think of with buying the Sony lens new is that you get some kind of warranty with it. And I like knowing that I'm the first (and therefore, only) owner of the lens and don't have to worry about whether something might go wrong because of what the previous owner did.

The quality of the pictures from the 50mm are great, really sharp. What I was saying about the sensor size, is that, yes the lens is designed for the APS-C sensor, but because the sensor is smaller than a full frame (35mm) it effectively magnifies the image by a factor of 1.6 so the equivalent focal length on a full frame lens would be approx 75mm.

For example, if you took the same picture on a 50mm lens on both a full frame sensor camera (Nikon D700), and a APS-C sensor camera (Yours - Sony A200) the one from the Sony would looked a little more zoomed in.

I would very much like the 35mm as well as I think that'd be an interesting focal length to have a go with. The fun of primes, other than the image quality is that you are the zoom :)

Hope that explains my last post a little better!

thanks for the help with this. Went into my local Jessops today and purchased the 50mm lens. Also treated myself to a mini tripod and a back up 4GB memory card.

The lens looks really good, took a few practice shots in the house and really impressed. Cant wait to get using it for real!

Nearly set for our trip away, fancy a polarising filter next :D
