Hi Guys
Looking at getting into football photography and think have found an in with a (much) lower league side, I am going to offer to cover matches free to build portfolio and get some experience
Secondhand lens wise i was thinkig 70-200 2.8 if i position myself top of the touch line or would i be better off with a 100-300 f4. I have a budget of around £700
Cheers
Dan

Have a look at the Sigma 50-500mm or 150- 500mm should be within your budget. I have the 150-500 and find it a good lens.

Was thinking that but is it fast enough also what iso will i get away with on my d90?

Hi Dan

I would suggest Nikon 70-200 f/2.8, you dont need VR for football. After that i would say Sigma 70-200 f/2.8

If you sit along the side of the pitch near to the half way line you will be able to cover most of the action.

If you sat behind the goals your looking at 300MM minimum, say sigma 120-300

you should be able to pick up good copies of these for within your budget (except the siggy 120-300, which i think is 1,000+)

If you are covering night games you will struggle with anything other than a 2.8 lens. So the 70-200 2.8 would be the one to go for.

Hi Dan,

Go for the sigma 120-300 which is a fantastic lens. Just as good if not better than the 70-200 with the same constant f2.8 and extra 100mm reach. It's the lens that a lot of guys use for rugby matches, football etc.

Dan i just noticed your budget mate. A second hand sigma will be around £900-£1000. Might be worth saving for a while though.

If I was you I'd hire both and see which you prefer. Depends on where you're going to be sat (and how much of the pitch you'll have to cover) if the 100mm extra is worth it or not.

I also have the Sigma 150-500mm attached to a Nikon D5000 and it is a superb lens.

Cheers for the input guys
Think i'll go for the 70-200 as i could use that for other stuff
Now to find a white one!

I have used a 70-210 for most of my football work with no problems although I do use the 70-300 occasionally, speed is the priority though especially on a dank day in the depths of winter so I would suggest the 70-200 f2.8 is the best bet to cover all eventualities throughout the season
