I am going to get a Nikon D100 for my first dslr, just wanted to know what lenses I would need for close ups, things like birds around 20 yards away and landscapes.
 
Start with a kit lens and something like a 55-300 or 70-300


This will cover you from 18-300mm and will allow you to try out most things
 
Thanks for the welcome, the only reason I ask about the lenses is because I've been offered a good deal on a d100 body so just wondered if there is a good all round lens that are good from close ups to landscapes and everything in between or if not, what separate sizes I would need
 
Does it come with a kit lens? Can't help thinking your money would be better spent on something newer. Sensor development has come on a long way since the 2002 d100.

I don't really want to spend a fortune on an all singing and dancing camera if its not for me, I made the same mistake with fishing, went out and bought a load of gear and used it for a year or 2, now it's just sat in the shed gathering dust. I don't want the same to happen here as I'm always reluctant in selling hobby related stuff incase I ever get into it again. I would rather have a few hundreds worth of 2nd hand equipment so it's not a great loss if I don't use it and can sell it without making a huge loss if I want to upgrade
 
You can get a much newer camera for a low amount of money. You could get one a couple of years old with a kit lens for £150. It would also be easier to sell than a 10 year old camera as the market will be larger (i.e, not many people want a 10 year old model)

Its not that you need all singing all dancing its the image sensor in newer models are a lot better.
 
I don't know how much you were spending on this d100, but you can pick up d70 body for about £100, and £150 will buy you a D70 and Lens. I still use my D70 and it still produces some nice A3 size prints.
 
i got offered it for £70 but im keeping an eye on the d70's on ebay so may get one of them witht he same lens
 
Have you considered a bridge camera? I bought a Fujifilm HS10 for £150 from ebay a few months ago to keep me busy during my convalescence from shingles. Mega zoom range from wide angle all the way to wildlife shots and almost all the features of a DSLR but without interchangeable lenses and a smaller sensor.

The bug really bit and I've just upgraded to a Nikon D5100.

PS (NO, I'm not trying to sell the fuji, lol)
 
The D70 is a cracker of a first camera, and great for learning with. I still have one in my kit bag

in so far as lenses go, landscapes and birds are 2 different subjects. The kit lens one gets with a D70 is fine for landscapes. for birds, you will need something a bit longer. A 70 - 300 will for sure fill in the gaps while you are learning

You need to know that you can pop some of the much older (very solid) and cheap Nikon lenses on a D70, there are a lot of good ones out there, eBay is your friend. the cute thing about the older lenses is they work on a full frame (when ever you move on)
 
Thanks for all the replies and helping me out, I have now bought a d70 and a 28-200 lens to get me started :)
