What lens do you use on a Canon full frame?

Hi,

Having picked up a 5D I'm lucky in that most of my lenses are fine (I didn't plan for EF mount, I just kept on buying expensive!), however the Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS is an EF-S equivalent, so what lenses do you guys use most on your full frames?

I'm lucky in that I don't have to sell the Sigma (which is a great lens by the way) as it works really well on my 60D.

Cheers

Another 17-40L f4 user here - used for landscapes where f4 isn't an issue as a wide angle on 35mm film and wide (ish) on my 1.3 crop 1D Mark 2. The 24-105L f4 is a nice range on 35mm or FF digital again providing you're not needing a faster f2.8.

24-105 IS here.

The 17-40 gives you the equivalent field of view to a 10-25 on a crop camera which will be waaaay different to what you're used to with the 17-50. For the same field of view you are used to on crop with your 17-50 you need a 28-80 lens on full frame. What's your budget?

Budget is a good question - not a great deal as I just got the 5D, however if I were to sell the 17-50 it would be that plus a little more.. I know vague!

I did have a Sigma 10-20 but didn't find myself using it that much, but in some ways it seems a shame going to FF without utilising the lack of crop if you follow me.

By the way guys don't you find f4 a little slow for general use?

I have to admit struggling with this one, I'm really not sure which way to go.

EDIT: haha, just checked the bank make that no money till I've saved up!!!

F4 limiting? No, but then I don't take pics of things that move in dark places without flash....

Not really but then I do next to nothing that folk tend to call 'general'.

If I'm honest I rarely go anywhere near f4 never mind f2.8 with short lenses as I tend to shoot landscapes so it's smaller apertures, longer shutter speeds and a tripod.

The only time I wish I could go faster than f4 is for birds and wildlife when shutter speeds drop in low light as I don't have the luxury of more modern ISO capabilities but that's with long lenses and a is a whole different ball game.

i probably use the Sigma 85 1.4 the most at the moment, but the 70-200 2.8 is a great lens too, probably my second most used - great for general photography and days out etc.

I personally use a Canon 24-70mm f2.8L on my 5D, but I've heard very good things about the Tamon 28-75mm f2.8 which is quite a bit cheaper!

I'm sure I read somewhere that the Tamron was soft at the edges, not that it matters too much if its sharp in the middle.

Canon 85 f1.8 - for some reason I much prefer it to my 40d and 50mm f1.8, though it's almost the same FOV

I couldn't disagree more with this statement. There is a reason why Zeiss costs what it does, and 17-40 or Tamron is just a mere fraction of that - the difference is the corners and distortion.

much sharper, better built, nice bokeh (vs. awful pentagonal busy horror), fast and accurately focusing

The 24-70 L f/2.8 spends a lot of time on my 5D mkII. It's surprising how much extra width you get compared to my 1.3X crop 1d MkIII

A 24-70 f/2.8L which is probably on my 5DMkII a good 80% of the time, plus a 16-35 f/2.8L, an old 70-300 f/4-f/5.6 and a 50mm f/1.4

My favourite lens on the 5D is the Canon 50mm f1.4 (I've not tried the Sigma for comparison, before we get into that debate), however I also like the 17-40 f4 for landscapes, but that would have the same sort of FoV as the 10-20.

As a direct replacement for your 17-50 the lens to go for would be the 24-70, although my preference is for primes lenses, hence using the 50mm as my walkabout lens, if you prefer wiser the 35mm f2.0 seems to be popular too.

I've been playing with the 50mm today (yet to look at the images though), but the 35mm is well priced so pretty tempting, as is the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM

Lol, 30mm Sig is for crops! Grrr, why can't the make it simple!

The whole DG, DC, Di, Di II winds me up :bonk:

17-40L and 50mm f4.

When funds will allow I might fancy the 70-200L f4 IS, but it can wait.

Canon 24-70 f2.8 pretty much covers everything I do day to day with my 5D. Once you get over the weight the two just feel perfect together.
